I too agree its hard to see him ruling the welterweight divisonbut I still think he'd give a Mayweather a good fight
too many threads on khan.... i dont know about elite but he is popular as hell.... mayweather vs khan...bring it
Fair question. Someone who is undoubtedly the best in a division. Obviously sometimes a division can have a weak era or a strong era so there's still some room for debate, but as a general rule: someone who is undoubtedly the best in a division. Perhaps also considered should be that they must be near the top of the P4P rankings, which will account for weak or strong periods across divisions.
So the closest Khan got to elite then was at 140 in 2011 when Bradley should have fought him to unify the division. Then Timmeh' moved up.
You don't have to be the "best" in the division to be elite. Being elite is being able to hang with the top dogs of the division (basically top 10 and potential challengers) and having more consistent wins then losses (you can lose and still be "elite"). Khan isn't elite yet but If you think there is a difference in world class and elite (and there is a case to be honest) then Khan is defo World Class. Khan still has time to become Elite. I won't be quick to jump the gun and say he never will.
You have a different definition to me and it's subjective. I like your world-class vs. elite comparison. I agree entirely with you that Khan is world-class, of that there is no doubt. Khan is a world-class operator and has proved it for years, but I don't think he'll ever be elite... as in one of the very best in the world (say top 5 P4P and clearly the best in his division or if a division is stacked, at least equal best with the other elite fighter). Khan does still have time to become elite but I can't see him getting there. Call it a prediction.
Would you consider Danny Garcia elite? I wouldnt. In my opinion Khan is kind of like Cotto. He will have success against fighters who cannot handle his speed, he will have some impressive wins against big names who are past their prime, but he will always struggle above a certain level and he too is a ducker like Cotto. He is definitely not an elite, performs like an A grade with a good style match up(appeared so against Devon and might appear so against Algieri), otherwise totally looks like a B grade(did against Garcia and Thurman, Brook etc will make him look amateurish if they ever fight).
Hes been in the top 10 of the LWW/WW division for the bones of a decade as well as picking up some titles, having won an olympic medal when he was 17. Thats elite if you ask me.
Elite fighters are willing to fight anyone not just a bunch of handpicked feather fisted opponents with sub 50% KO rates. Khan lost the chance to be elite a long time ago. Roach tried to make him elite it just didn't work because Khan doesn't have a Chin or Ring IQ. All Hunter has done is put Khan in there with feather fisted opponents to make him look good and he hasn't even done that really :rofl
Theres so much wrong with that quote I dont know where to begin. Khan has fought Kotelnik Malignaggi Peterson Judah Alexander Maidana Garcia And then of course Cotto has fought Mayweather Pacquiao Mosely Martinez Judah Clottey Malignaggi Margarito (x2) Corley Bailey And you say they're duckers??? GTFOH
OK, fair enough, but I see him as world-class. I don't deny that he's a world-class operator. I think at the very highest level he'll come up short. Even Mayweather gets clocked and he has a very good chin and very good defence. Too many other potential top fighters will find Khan's chin and have him reeling. Fighters who are good enough will find his chin. I don't really consider Garcia elite there are exceptions. My definition is crude and we still need to judge on a "case by case" basis, but crudely put, I think the guidelines suffice. I agree with your view on Khan.
