Not the most obvious comparison, but there are similarities and theread on his "1.5% bodyfat" got me thinking. Bruno was hugely hyped by the media and was popular amongst casual observers who were impressed by his physical condition who were oblivious to his limited abilites (just a big punch), and the flaws such as his punch resistance which was first hinted at in his scare against Jumbo Cummings but was ignored until Witherspoon exposed it graphically. Now we have the same with Khan, with his handspeed as his only real talent, a chin that will come acropper at even a slightly higher level then he's fighting at now, but huge publicity and popularity amongst the general public. In fact, I'd say relatively speaking, Khan has less chance then Bruno of world glory due to the array of talent at lightweight. Fast hands is hardly in short supply around that weight class even if he does have a tad more speed then most of his rivals, they'll probably know how to neutralise it. Bruno at least stood a chance in the pre-Tyson era due to the way the then heavyweights seemed to lose motivation after one defence and got hooked on cocaine or food, or both.
The comparison is interesting but wrong IMO. Bruno had a solid chin, look at all the whacks he took of 89 Tyson and apart from the shock of the first few seconds he stayed on his feet; ditto the Cummings fight Smith and Whitherspoon he took a lot of punishment before falling. Bruno's problem was he was a robot, who when he was hit, lacked the ability to cover up and survive. This problem was resolved slightly near the end of his career, when Francis managed to programme him to cling on for dear life when stung. Khan has I think a slightly soft chin that is made worse by poor balance and too open style. I think these balance and style problems can and will be resolved. Khan as he steps up levels will need to be more conservative if he wants to get to the very top IMO.
I think Khan has a lesser chin than Bruno but more ring savvy, which in part makes up for the problem. Bruno was also a concussive puncher, as opposed to Amir, who is cumulative. Not a bad shout though.
bruno was a nice guy and had the whole of britain behind him.khan is starting to get a bit cocky.if he gets too cocky like hamed then he will only have half of britain behind him and the other half wanting him to get knocked out to teach him a lesson.
:good You could only admire bruno especially in 89 when he gave the most feared man in boXING FOR FOUR ROUNDS an examination.
I met Frankilyn Roy Bruno in Barons Nightclub Swansea before where he was DJing the night - I shook his hand with veins popping out of his arms - very impressive body even after being retired for a few years. THe next week he was all over the papers because he had suffered a mental breakdown - I thought he looked a bit out of it the night I seen him - it was like he was not there mentally just going through the motions. Khan is more talented than Bruno I dont see a obvious comparison. Khan is more like Alex Arthur - one day he gonna come apart spectacalurly like Arthur did against Michael Gomez. Think about it if that was the GOmez of 2003 in there with Khan he might have done the upset.
No he didnt. Il never understand why so much stock is put into that fight when Bruno suffered a humiliating beat down and KO loss. Bruno was a nice guy but the guy just never knew when to take a knee. He never boxed intelligiently and when hurt was like a deer caught in a rovers headlights. He simply froze and took his beating. He did this every time he lost.Admitedly though it was against top class opposition. Now Bruno fought in an era when boxing was mainstream. Even well into the 90`s boxing was on terrestrial TV and the average man in the street knew what was going on. Khan only gained notoriety because of Warrens move back to ITV and the Olympics. His not really endearing to the public as was Bruno and his world title tilt and 2 bouts with Tyson and his huge British clash with LL. Anyway i fail to see any comparison between Khan and Bruno. Bruno was bonafide world class. He fought in a deep division and boxings second glorious heavyweight division. Khan isnt close to world class in my opinion despite his audacious ranking by the "Ring" and he certainly doesnt have the tools to hang with the best at 35 at this early stage of his career. One thing was certain about Bruno in his early career. He was fit he was strong and he could punch. Khan may be fit but his not strong and his not a puncher. The jury is still well and truly out on this kid.
Frank used to train at Peacocks. I used to see him on a regular basis. His fooking huge. His head is twice the size of mine! He stayed in the hopsital i used to work at for a short while (Goodmayes Mental Hospital) but even the nurses there couldnt control his fits of rage. Good comparison with AA. I defintly see Khans career as being much more like Arthurs. Taken apart spectacularly by a journeyman and then gifted the WBO as per usual for most SN fighters. AA much like Khan had way too much smoke blown up his ass and bought into his own hype.
Of course Naz had a good chin to back him up (nearly all the kd's he suffered were when he was caught (a) off-balance (b) square on or (c) got his legs tangled together). Khan doesn't have that fall back.
AA at least though won the Euro, Brit and Commonwealth titles before his WBO gift though. Doesn't seem like Khan's Interested In the other two belts.
How many SN fighters have won euro titles since 00? Can only think of Wayne Alexander and Arthur? Nicky Cook won his before he signed to SN.
He only signed Nicky because he did the unthinkable and won all domestic titles. Before that Nicky was toiling in obscurity for years. I cant think of any apart from Wayne and AA. But im sure Wayne never defended that title. Shame how his career panned out.. But that seems to happen alot to SN fighters:blood
