After trial visits to several top coaches, Amir Khan has chosen a relatively unknown Cuban to be his next trainer.
Khan's local paper, the Bolton News, revealed that Jorge Rubio Agramonte is the man who will be taking over from Dean Powell, who stood in for the Michael Gomez fight after Khan parted company with Oliver Harrison.
In an ironic twist, perhaps the best known boxer to have come under Agramonte's stewardship is Mario Kindelan - the man who defeated a young Khan to take gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Apparently, Agramonte was also in the corner for David Haye in his win over Enzo Maccarinelli but such was the brevity of that contest his presence wasn't really noted.
“This is Amir's choice and nobody else's,” explained Khan's father, Shah, to the Bolton News.
“When we went to America he trained with both Mayweathers, McGirt, and he's worked with Roach before, but it was Jorge who he was most impressed with.
“They worked together on technique and he liked Amir's style and, most importantly, Amir liked his. He may not be the most famous name but that's not what we wanted. We wanted someone who can improve Amir and, when he wins a world title, everyone will know who Jorge is then.”
Agramonte came to Britain last week and is already helping Commonwealth lightweight champion Khan prepare for his September 6th showdown against an opponent yet to be named. It is hoped that the name of the opponent will be made public on Wednesday.
Trainer of British lightweight champion John Murray, Joe Gallagher, told BBN last week that he had offered Khan a fight with his charge three times but to no avail.

I'm suprised they didn't get a polish immigrant to do it for 5.52 an hour.

They are all too busy working as security guards :deal

All they do is take a tenner from the villain, lock themselves in the site cabin and phone the police :deal

Time will tell if Khan's choice of new trainer is the right one.

I'm going to reserve judgement for now - see how he fares in his next couple of fights. Hopefully we will see signs of improvement.

My security company will not employ any immigrants if their skills are less then suitable for the role... too many companies just bodies with badges... Portal Security Services - if carling did security companies.....

Yeah, this guy could turn out to be quite a good trainer but quotes like this are bull****,
“When we went to America he trained with both Mayweathers, McGirt, and he's worked with Roach before, but it was Jorge who he was most impressed with."

Bet the truth is Khan didn't want to base himself in America and Rubio was the only trainer who was prepared to come to England to train Khan.

I just feel it would be a little premature of me to write this new guy off.

We won't really know if this is a good decision or a bad one until he has had a chance to work with Khan.

Hopefully he can develop Khan as a fighter and will pay particular attention to addressing some of his weaknesses.

I bet this was the case too

Khan needs to go stateside if he wants to fulfil his potential, and now was the time to do it, but he's taken the easy option

He just seems to be surrounding himself with 'yes' men and not people who will give him the right advice to help him progress in his career.

Whats Rubio going to teach that he could not have learnt from Mick Jelly or Oli H.

Bollacks choice and based on getting any old trainer who was willing to spend time in the UK. Complete and utter farce of a situation.

Ironbull is probably too busy on the amirfans forum bigging up Rubio and telling everyone he trained David Haye etc etc.

His in a comfort zone and will do jack **** to get out of it. Maybe he would miss crusing Bolton in his fancy cars on friday/saturday nights.

You get some boxers who are hungry for success and want to better their boxing skills, Khan is not one of these as he has had a platinum spoon in his mouth since the olympics.

premature to right the guy off is true. lets see how he gets on. If Haye has this guy in his corner then that is saying something in my opinion.
