When the rumour of Khan fighting Murray made its way onto these boards, I very suddenly had a lot more respect for Khan. Had he cleaned up in his division(British)then went on to the World stage, would he have more people backing him? There's a lot of ill feeling from fans about Amir and i'm convinced its not down to race but his undeserved title shot/smack talking. discuss....
if he cleans up the british division 1st then has a rematch wih prescott then hell get my full backing!
Ditto. Actually, on second thought he has to stop answering every question with "definitely" as well.
Like it or not, you have to accept that Warren was pretty stuck with Khan. He needed to get him a fastrack to a world title because all of the public's eyes were on Khan after the olympics and have been ever since. Although he won't admit it, Warren should have gave Khan the old school apprenticeship: British, Commonwealth, European. But, like I said, Warren's had to bypass all of this to get him a title shot to keep the casual fans and general public interested. Also, Khan is a very popular figure within Britain's Pakistani community, and so he should be, so this also explains why he has enjoyed considerable popularity. I never used to like the hypetrain surrounding him but ever since his loss to Prescott, and the subsequent bashing by idiots, I have been transformed into a big fan of his. I hope he now enjoys considerable success in the sport.
Nah, there's always somebody else to fight. Fighting (and beating) Murray would impress most hardcore British fans. But if he did that and he's stepping up in weight, should he fight McClosky if he can already get a shot at Kotelnik? Frank Warren got Khan a bypass when he secured a fight with MAB. How Warren achieved this is beyond me but Khan now finds himself pretty firmly placed in the top 10 rankings of the various world belt orgs. The bottom line is that Khan no longer needs to fight Thaxton, Murray or whoever in the UK. Khan has got a good following regardless of who he fights and most boxing fans are fickle. If Khan went straight for Kotelnik and beat him, following this up with big fights against top american/world names then the boxing public as a whole would support him... and probably enthusiastically.
Being on PPV also had an affect on his fast-track to a world title. I support Khan now (since his humbling), but I would fully respect him getting in the ring with Prescott again and I am sure he would convert a few of the haters in the process.
Beating Murray would prove nothing and it never would have. Beating Prescott would be impressive but beating Kotelnik trumps the lot.
Funny that those who have met him and know him have a totally different image of the guy than the haters who only know him from forum crusades and bad tabloid stories. Khan is a great guy.
khan needs to challenge himself, we all agree he has skills.....if khan could some how make statement, the critics would have a nice cold glass of STFU......and i'm a proud khan hater.....but i would be very impressed if he could make a statement
A lot of guys who have high status early in their careers skip the european route. I think Id have more respect for him were he to do that. i also think that it would be good for him as a fighter. Problem is, it means less money in the short term.
I'm sure he said that he wasn't ready for Marquez and the other top lightweights. Think it might have been on Buncey but perhaps I've been brainwashed by the twitters I've been reading every 5 mins from the Bring Back site. I used to be quite anti, but now supporting Khan all the way. Had a ticket for 02 but can't make it to MEN. I do think he would happily fight Prescott again but his promoter is never going to let that happen. Not Amir's fault though, Warren's taking car of business and to hell with hardcore fans and a more 'worthy' approach and keeping off PPV.
i agree with losfer... khan should've had much more schooling and learnt the trade even if it ment being matched with a few more super feathers, then he should've slowly grown to the higher weights, youngsters with a lot of publicity early become cash cows and therefore are pushed when they're not ready and given too much too soon, thats fine with any other sport but in boxing for obvious reason its career shattering Khan to me has the look of a late developer in terms of mentally and his skills, going on ppv was a big mistake as it just exentuated the problem, ideally he would've stayed and grown on terestrial and at least won the British title first, ok for less money but it would've better in the long term, its not like the rating were dropping in fact it was getting higher and he was getting to the point where no matter who the opponent people would watch.
He will be protected by warren, hand picked opponents till he builds up an impressive record, then he will have a megga fight with the man whoever that might be at the time and he will be taken to school just like nasseem. This is how boxing works these days and why wrestling in the states is a more popular sport than boxing the great fights hardly ever happen. thats how it is chaps, but not everyone can see it.
