An exciting brawl no doubt, and in the end the proven product at the weight would have the edge.

Galaxy off the floor in four.

Agreed, and the vid you posted was a highlight. Watching a full fight, you get a much better sense of his style, and how flawed he was. He really seems to be a guy who feasted on lesser competition with his physical strength and power. In terms of his career, reminds me somewhat of a guy like Wonjongkam, with a great record against less than stellar competition in his backyard.

I would count on many of the better boxers and boxer/puncher types to beat him.

The real problem with him is that he fought in the golden age of the division and barely fought any of the other top fighters.

It's not a deep division though and most of the champions since the eighties have not been all that good IMO, so he'd still likely end up as one of the better fighters for his huge power and strength alone.

I've seen the two fights on YouTube against Espinosa and Monserrat, so that's where I came to this conclusion too. Wonjongkam is a great comparison; lots of title defenses, but little desire to fight the best.

There are more than a few guys I'd favor over him. Arce/Galaxy would be a barnburner.

I do agree with that, because it did seem he turned it up a notch against ones who took it to him. He may well have been the Foreman of 115, but a skilled outboxer would've beaten him in my opinion. As I said, early as it is, Mijares would give him a thumping. I'm starting to come around to Mijares, much as I didn't want to.

Mijares is one of the guys I'd confidently take over Galaxy. He's a great little fighter with nice versatility and boxing skills.

Amsterdam's hyping of Mijares as God either has one of two effects on people: 1) They are annoyed and turn away from Mijares or 2) Take notice and become fans since he's seems to be a practitioner of the sweet science. I'm a fan of his and think pretty highly of him after seeing a few more of his fights and the ones in Japan.

Mijares is good, but he's not on the level of someone like Watanabe or Roman technically.

I'm not sure he would just outbox Galaxy round after round, though he's better than most of the fighters Galaxy fought. It wouldn't be difficult to see him make things very close.

Now there's a very under-mentioned, but exceptionally skilled fighter. Excellent boxer-puncher, one of the best I've ever seen at Flyweight skill-wise.

As to the matchup, which one? Yuri vs Mijares or Galaxy?

Against Galaxy, Yuri is clearly the better boxer, and if I hold true to what I said earlier, that the top boxer-punchers would take Galaxy, it doesn't get much better than him. Galaxy may have hit harder, but he had nowhere near the skill or accuracy, nor the out-boxing ability of Arbachakov. I think he would hurt Galaxy. Galaxy was capable of being hurt, but had good recovery, and against the mostly scrubs he faced(aside from a few) they weren't able to capitalize on it. Arbachakov would be the guy who would. I'd take him by late stoppage after out-boxing Galaxy. He may just win a Decision though, as I have to admit I may underrate Galaxy due to the praise he gets that I feel is unjust. Yuri was definitely better though.

As far as Mijares, man that would be something. Let me think about it a bit more. Great call bringing up Yuri though, I myself hadn't thought much about him for a while. Very underrated.

As has been pointed out already Galaxy did not face the best his division had to offer, and this will always cast a black mark on his legacy. His best attributes were his power and tenacity, but otherwise he was slow of both hand and foot and was easy to hit, especially to the body because of his high guard.

I could see him getting outboxed rather easily against either Konadu or Watanabe for example, but his power would always pose an imminent threat to them and be a factor until the last bell as Galaxy carried his power into the late rounds as demonstrated in his fights against Pical and the second Matsumura fight among others.

He would stand a much better chance against more flatfooted types such as Sung Kil Moon for example, and what a shootout that one would have been! Moon`s clubbing yet freakishly powerful hooks against Galaxy`s straighter almost missile like lefts coming down the pipe.

Both had good chins, but Galaxy was a very slow starter and I could see him getting taken out early by Moon who came out firing. But back to the topic at hand Galaxy was a good, not great fighter who built up an impressive title reign on rather average opposition for the most part.

The fact that he did not meet any of his contemporarys hurts his standing historically and from a stylistic standpoint he could be easily outboxed by a good mover with a jab, but as I stated earlier his power would always be a factor and his opponents could not afford to get careless with him.

One thing you could always count on with Khaosay was that no matter what he would keep pressing forward looking to land that big left, and nothing you could do would discourage him from doing so. He would keep you working all night and if you were in anything less than spartan shape for the fight, chances are you would get laid out for the count.

I haven't seen enough Roman to comment, but I've seen enough Watanabe. I think Mijares is an overall more skilled fighter if I'm being honest. When taking into account only head to head ability, Mijares is one of the best I've seen at 115 pounds, he has a chance to be special.

Watanabe is more of a pure boxer than Mijares, who can box and fight, and has a better inside game. He also does have a very good outboxing game of his own, a very good jab, which compliments his reach. I'd favor him over Watanabe, and I think once he gets more exposure, people will start to see that he is special.

I thought Watanabe had a terrific combination of skill, speed and power.

    Just an excellent overall boxer-puncher.

Galaxy was a bantamweight version of George Foreman. He was not fast or technical at all, but he could hit a ton. Galaxy was perhaps the best Asian puncher of all time.

Was Galaxy that good? Hard to say. I have seen many regional over seas fighters build up a reputation as a world-beater, only to be exposed when they fought out of their own country.

As brownpimp just brought up, what do you think of Yuri Arbachakov? I'd like to hear you and Raging B(_)LL's opinions.
