This is the one fight that Benny Uriquidez probably should have as an "L" on his record. Officially he is still undefeated as this fight was considered a no-contest due to a riot after the 9th round. Someone has finally unearthed the ultra rare footage of this fight and posted it to Youtube. So here it is - watch and decide for yourself as to what the outcome might have been.

Regardless of the outcome of this fight - I always give Benny credit for fighting everyone that he could in his quest to become a world champion. He fought the best fighters from Europe, Thailand and Japan. More world champions would do well to follow in his footsteps.

Good fight! Very action packed, although it's quite hard to pick up on everything with the quality of the vid and the fact it's in black and white.

Benny started well and took the first few rounds. But the Thai fighter came back well from then on, being much more active and aggressive, using his leg kicks to good effect. I would have said that the Thai fighter won personally, perhaps sealing/nicking it at the end with the knockdown. However if there is a riot and rounds left, it should be a NC as anything can happen in a fight. Also the ref seemed to be on the Thai fighters case for a lot of the fight. Whether he was being dirty or not it's hard to tell.

    Just a few questions though:

Where did the fight take place?
How many rounds was it scheduled for?
And were knees in the clinch or elsewhere allowed as the Thai fighter seemed to get pulled up for it once or twice?

It's hard to find information on this but here is what is posted over at USA Karate Story:

    http://karate-in-english-lewis-wallace.blogspot.com/2008/04/benny-jet-urquidez-simply-gifted.html

In 1977, he meets Narongnoi Kiatbandit, practising Thai-Boxing. This WKA fight, in Los Angeles, is recorded as a No-Contest in 9 rounds. According to some sources, Kiatbandit has won the fight, while Benny Urquidez claims to have won this match. In his book, he said that the officials had fear of a riot in the Arena (Benny was ahead on points), and gave a No-Contest Decision. John Corcoran confirmed the riot in the Arena, in his book "The Original Martial Arts Encyclopedia" but doesn't mention a decision to avoid the riot.

We can see that both fighters are counted after a trip to the canvas and that the knee blows were banned, given the warnings received by Kiatbandit. Unfortunately, the decision of the judges is not filmed, even if we notice that objects are thrown on the canvas from the attendance.

All seems a bit fishy to me. Considering it was in America, I think it's fairly easy to think that they would fix the decision in favour of Urquidez, but there isn't any proof so we can't really say that.

What I don't get is that why would they fear a riot in L.A. when Urquidez was supposedly up on points? He was the home fighter. Also that no knees rule is bull****. Seems as if they tried to make the fight in Benny's favour as much as possible. Not to take anything away from him.

Unfortunately in a sport like kickboxing which is not regulated very well to begin with and at times like that where it is a very small-time sport and it's hard to find out true accounts and fight records, stuff like this seems to happen a lot.

Shades of Machida/Shogun anyone? Karate vs muay thai?
