This is not a match-up thread but does Floyd Mayweather look like a faster but more defensive version of the Cuban Bon Bon? They are very similar in many things. Both use the shoulder role, have a great straight right, similar footwork. The main difference is that Chocolate uses his jab much more and is a better feinter creating his countering opportunities while Mayweather waits for his. Am I wrong or is there something in it?
I agree too, will watch the fight with Canzoneri tommorow and go abit more in-depth if this thread is still kicking around.
Nice ava, quite happy he won last weekend. Would like to see him fighting Khan at lww. He´d probably lose but we would know what Khan is made of afterwards. I´ll bump it it, would like to see your contribution. I also hope Stonehands will look into this thread and give his opinion.
Not much to say considering that the footage available is limited at the moment. Looks like a modern boxer fighting in the late 1920's/early 1930's.
Ok, I will start with the stance. He holds his right hand up to the side of his head but his left hand is held low but not across his chest more tilted to the left. This allows him to snap out left jabs and hooks with ease, but also whilst on defence Chocolate and can pull his left across his body and defend himself from their. He also has quite a wide base, especially when he gets inside and is trading, it allows him good balance but it also gives him more leverage in his punches. He is at his best on the outside popping that jab and showing angles off the jab. He is a great judge of distance and this allows him to float seamlessly in behind the jab and get in some cracking combinations, it also allows him to slip underneath from the outside and come in and under with some nice uppercuts, he does this especially well in the early rounds against Canzoneri. However, when he has to he stands his ground inside with nice head movement. I think he differs a lot from Mayweather on the inside, and is more effective. They both do the shoulder roll but Chocolate gets down low and tends to bob and weave and when he counters, he looks to counter with combination punches normally accentuated by his left hook and straight right. I think on the inside he is a bit of a jack-in-the-box as he ducks underneath his foes punches, pops up whacks them afew times and pops back down. The 4th and 5th rounds of his fight with Canzoneri showcase his best skills. In the 4th round he is trading with Canzoneri, keeping it in close with his good defence and looking to comeback with those counter combinations. In the 5th he sticks to his boxing and is very mobile and agile as he stays off the ropes and in centre ring with very nice jabs and feints. In the later rounds with Canzoneri he gets caught up in a fight, Canzoneri looks the stronger as he pushes him back. In the 14th Chocolate tries to slug it out with Canzoneri but is getting beat whilst doing it IMO, as Canzoneri is allowed to land the harder punches. However, in the 15th Chocolate keeps at war with him but this time looks for the counter combinations and this allows him to land the cleaner shots. Overall, I think Chocolate is the better fighter than Mayweather, he showcases a lot more dimensions to his game in the inside fighting, long range game and counterpunching games that he brings to the table. He also as El Buija points out he has balls and is willing to trade and fight it out when he has too, but most importantly Chocolate knows when he has to trade it out and when to box. I'm going to be getting some more Chocolate footage soon, 1 thing I forgot to say is how 'modern' Chocolate looks.
The difference between Kid Chocolate and Floyd Mayweather is 111 fights, against anyone, big or small, Kid Chocolate fought...Those tougher times, you fought the very best the public demanded...There was so much great fighters in Kid Chocolate's time, all bidding for the title shot, you had to tackle everyone.. Does anyone think that if Floyd Mayweather fought 111 more bouts against the very best [thinking, Pacuiano, Paul Williams, etc ]he would have the record of the great Cuban Bon Bon. ? Not so .say I..
Ah, I´m a big fan of that time. So, many great fighters and they all fought each other all the time like every week. I don´t know why the promoters of today don´t realize that making the big fights happen brings them more money than securing the "0" of their fighters against nobodies. Such a shame because I´m sure some of the guys around today were on the level of the great fighters of tha past. They just never prove it. Sadly.
Interesting post. Chocolate also tries to create his chances for countering by feinting where Mayweather just waits for his opponent. What footage do you get or different question what footage is out there, Canzoneri I, LaBarba II (a part), Al Singer. What else?
