Some brawlers that could beat Gavilan imo. Walker, Ted Kid Lewis, Joe Walcott perhaps(No footage) and a few others. Not to say Gavilan would lose here, just saying I give these guys a great shot in pulling out the win on any giving day.
Yes! But Griffith wouldn't have slugged it out with him. He was more measured than that. I could have sworn you said something about laying an egg. I'll blame it on the Strongbow.
Lewis held Britton even in their fights ,so boxing ability wouldnt worry him,he was all action and could hit a bit,Gavilan had a top chin so no danger of him being kod ,but he sometimes fought in flurries,Lewis didnt he would be coming all night,I think he out hustles Gavilan.
You say that, but then I've seen Gavilan fight at a steady pace on the inside, mauling and shoving and body punching - occasionally interrupted by a stunning flurry.
Kid Gavilan is a top 5 WW of all time, it's very possible with not only his own brawling skills, but his craftiness and versatility that he would in fact beat every brawler. In fact I'd agree with the thread.
Alright, after a little thought...The fighter I pick is the '79-'80 welter Roberto Duran. This would be a fantastic fight. Duran is a 'brawler' but brought some slick defensive skills, and that is what would take the fight. I imagine after feeling Gavilan return his ferocity right back at him in the first quarter of the fight (and then some), Duran would elect to counter more, which he would be very sucessful with, against Gavilan. Duran's power would not bother Gavilan at all,in fact, I feel Gavilan would charge all night, and Duran would be there tying him up, superior head movement enabling him to bob and weave under Gavilan attacks, and being close enough to smother his flurries. While mixing his own attack to the Kid's head and body... It would be a 'brawl'....but it would be Duran's 'brawl'. I'm not inferring that Duran is the better historical welterweight, ther is no doubt that is Gavilan. In a series, Gavilan problably evens things up. But for one fight, I'll take Duran, he is the better technical infighter Re Armstrong....A fight between he and Gavilan would be absolutely tremendous. I do not agree it would be suprisingly easy for Gavilan. Armstrong's relentless forward pressure would back Gavilan up, forcing him to reset...and Armstrong would be reaching him. I pick Gavilan...but surprisingly easy. NO way!
Couple of points: He actually did fight some decent guts on the way up (Cisneros was pretty solid fringe contender, for one...so was Turiello- the two decision over Cocoa Kid prove that point). Prior to defeating Abrams, he defeated the much-avoided, and very legitimate Holman Williams...which, methinks, qualifies as a another nice name on anyone's resume. :deal The loss to Delannoit (who wasn't that bad...he had two decisions over Dauthille prior to meeting Cerdan) was considered, according to all reliable accounts, a dubious decision at best. Bear in mind that Cerdan was also past his best during the time that he faced Zale...and, also bear in mind that Zale had pretty much walked over Graziano to regain the title only two months earlier. So...this victory shouldn't be so easily discounted. Cerdan was an excellent fighter, Luigi, and HARDLY the worst fighter in the HOF. Gavilan might defeat him h2h...but something tells me it wouldn't be an easy task.
