Brutal dismantling of a previously undefeated fighter. Davey had out-pointed a faded Graziano, beaten Baslio and KO'd Ike William to get the shot, but KG brutalised him like he was nothing. Some of the most aggressive punching i've seen from a greatfighter, and a lesson in how to use the right hand versus the southpaw. Gavilan gives a clinic.

What do you think happened here? Davey looks legit on paper, but he isn't in this bout after the first KD. Is Gavilan just that good, or was Davey inflated? Williams claims to have taken a dive versus Chuck.

    Special performanc.

Davey was simply not in the class of Kid Gavilan but his southpaw style legitimately bothered many fighters. Some of his wins may or may not have been fixed, but the wins over Basilio and Graziano were certainly not. Gavilan seemed to figure out Davey's style however and could hardly miss with his right hand leads.

Davey was mostly hype. He's never impressed me at all.

That said, fighting well against a pre-prime Basilio was a mighty achievement for him considering the talent he had.A bit like Charlie magri against Santos Laciar.

davey was a cool, clean, very smart and played his southpaw advantage in every fight. kinda fragile but it wasnt his major weak point.just lacked devil and variety. becuase of that, guys who had an extra dimension to them I.E. gavilan. it was pretty easy to figure him out. also not many thought he was as good as his unbeaten record suggested. i think graziano was suppose to be fed to him to get him back on track, davey's lack of power and workrate would mean that he would wilt under the pressure of the bigger guy...false sense of security i suppose. wins over graziano and basilio where more becuase he didnt go out there to get into a fight.

great performance by gavilan. showed how massive a leap of class between them.

i know it's not the same but politics wise a more modern day example might be alfonso gomez (totally different style i know) after he beat tackie and gatti i think a few started to think he could beat on the top levelers he had a name and looked pretty good in his previous fights but was shown up horribly by cotto.......yah semme?

anyways great performance by the rarely filmed prime gavilan.
