great great fighter. # 8 welterweight of all time. I can't say enough about how slick and fast gavilan is, and that bolo punch I LOVE IT!
I've said it before, I think Gavilan was more about physicalities than boxing skills or intelligence. Of course, he was a very good boxer, but his material prowess is what made him. His stamina and ferocity were hard to match; rugged welterweights of the era like Johnny Bratton and Gil Turner will tell you all about that. Gavilan answered all their attacks with a fury neither of them could answer. Speed and durability were two other attributes Gavilan possessed at the highest level.
thing is Gavilan was somewhat overshdowed by Robinson. At his peak the guy is a top 5 all time welterweight IMO
