I have trouble picking against Whitaker but I think Gavilan is big enough and busy enough to take this.
Still see Whitaker winning the fight. It would be tough, and a very hard battle.... likely his toughest test. I just can't see anybody outboxing Pea, and Kid would be trying just that.
This is certainly a distance fight. Who had better skills than SweetPea? He was still a very good Welterweight up to about `94 `95. I think the slippage started just after that. I believe Kid Gavilan had the edge in speed and workrate. It`s gonna be tough to catch Whitaker with clean punches. I think this is a fight that would be controversial. With Gavilan throwing more and maybe landing a bit more but Whitaker countering sharply and being more economical but effective.
Gavilan by decision here. He would be less afraid to impose his size and aggression than say, McGirt or De La Hoya were. McGirt held back and played chess a bit because he didn't have the size or power to impose, and DLH was still a bit green and didn't want to look bad. Gavilan would just walk him down, take what he had to, and flurry like a bast/rd to take the play away.
Whitaker is problematic because he is a great fighter...But this pretty much sums it up in my view...
