I keep changing my mind about this one. Would be pretty close,in my estimation.

It's afe to say this will go the distance...

I think Gavilan was a little wild in his aggression, and Whitaker is able to expose those defensive lapses more often than not.

    Close but clear for Whitaker.

So wild that he was able to press the faster, rangier, more powerful Sugar Ray Robinson to the closest decision of his career and the nearest thing he has to a loss in his prime at WW.

The Keed would win this fight.

I think Gavilan had enough weapons at his disposal along with the ring intelligence and speed to land actual, for real clean punches on sweat pea. Would probably push pea further than he was ever pushed. It's really close though, damn. Definately decision.

Silly question I believe. Kid Gavilan was stronger and threw an arsenal of every punch in the book, for 15 rounds. Gavilan with 143 fights ,had nothing to fear from Whitaker. NOTHING ! Plus Gavilan fought in a much TOUGHER era that had a great pool of fighters.
I could name many of his opponents that would have licked Pernell. Gavilan would
punched through Whitakers defense, especially knowing that he couldn't be hurt.
Gavilan by a unanimous 15 round decision...

Not entirely sure about that, I think TheGreatA said the Bell fight was booed when the decision was anounced.

Faster better timed technicians can penetrate Whitakers defense (Hurtado, McGirt, DLH, Mayweather) was more susceptable to rangy fighters too. Whitaker is the better pure boxer of the 2, Galivan the bigger rangier man. I think it would be a really close technical bout but I give Pea the slight edge

No one ever licked Whitaker until he was way past prime and he fought in a tough era greats like Trinidad, McGirt, Chavez, Delahoya. Pea schools most of Galivan's era with the exception of Robinson, Galivan and maybe Bell, Basilio/Ike Williams he'd win wide decisions against

You think? I get the feeling that Robinson won the rematch fairly soundly, proving beyond doubt he was the better man. And I am sure the 'closest decision of his career' is hyperbole on your part.

I agree on the Gavilan winning. I just think his slashing punching style and the way he always threw in bunches is hell for a defensive wizard like Whittaker.

Gavilan lost some sinkers by UD. Just under 20% KO ratio . Pea out points him , out lands him , and boxes him to a UD

Losing sinkers? I hate it when I lose a sink, it really messes up shaving and the occasional time I wash my hands after a wank....anyway most of those sinkers are considered robberies from what I can gather

At WW this heavily favors the Keed for sure, just a matter of physical primes and that would make the difference there tbqh. Whitaker is definitely a live dog though, I feel sorry for whoever would have to score this one.

gavilan is more proven at the weight. his losses often/typically sprung from lack of training or just plain ****ing about. at his best, gavilan could (obviously) hold his own with the best welters of all time.

i love sweet pea but he did seem to do best when facing opponents who came right at him (struggling slightly with fellas like mcgirt) though he did great work against patient fighters like nelson.

at the end of the day i'll go with the guy who did his best work at 147, gavilan
