I should just say, it's terrific to be watching Kid Gavilan again. I always love watching the Kid, but I must confess I have never seen this one before. This content is protected 1. The Kid clearly employed the bolo early. It was blatant. I felt Gavilan was eager to establish a hold of dominance over Buker early. The latter half of the round was quite tame in comparison. Gavilan. 2. Gavilan peppered Buker with left hooks. He was simply too fast for Buker. Gavilan. 3. Gavilan. 4. At first, the two mixed it up, and hard. Buker was dropped by a singularly big assault. Gavilan. 5. Mostly a pretty fast-paced round with few clinches. Even. 6. Gavilan. 7. Boxing from the outside, Gavilan maintained control of the bout, yet was still eager to fight with Buker. A lively scrap did take place during this round. As the round approached the bell for the end, Buker threw a bunch of huge uppercuts, all of which missed. Gavilan then fought back with an accurate flurry; Buker slipped backwards during this flurry from the Kid. Gavilan. 8. Gavilan. 9. Gavilan pinned Buker just long enough to get him groggy. Gavilan's most dominant round of the match. Gavilan. 10. Like the 1st, Gavilan re-applied the bolo, although I'm not entirely sure why he stopped using it after the 1st. Both were plenty tired by now. Gavilan. A white-wash in terms of scoring. Gavilan won 9 out of 10 rounds and one was even. Verdict: Being Gavilan's earliest filmed performance, which means Gavilan is young, it is a good performance, although not a noteworthy fight. Gavilan looked good even at looking mediocre. He showed tremendous speed and movement, as well as more than fair punching power and stamina. Buker was not really a big name though. Having checked his record his most notable fights prior to this were fights with the Minellis and he was just coming off a draw with Gene Burton right before he met with Gavilan. Not a classic, but if you're a Gavilan freak, this does prove interesting.
Interesting to see Gavilan this early. As you said, his hand speed and overall quickness is what stood out. Ben Bukar was game and durable but otherwise looked mediocre and over his head. Gavilan fought Ike Williams and Sugar Ray Robinson in 1948. Too bad those aren't on film, but I guess we should be thankful we have this one. Your verdict is right on.
