Not getting hurt(aside from one instance where he got too cocky) for 13-14 years is pretty good defense to me.
Yes, a prime Roy Jones was a great defensive fighter. Unorthodox in the fact that he relied mostly on his insane reflexes and quickness to avoid punches, but great defense nonetheless. Have you ever seen Floyd Mayweather show us the combinations Roy did?
Roy Jones is an entire level above Floyd in terms of talent. The types of people that Floyd has had trouble with(Hatton, Chavez, Castillo, old De La Hoya, etc) Jones would've taken care of like he did guys like Pazienza, Hill, etc.
Floyd was KNOWN for his combinations...most notably at 130..135...140...he hsant put his punches together much at the higher weights for the obvious reasons.
Why does it have to be the ability to block punches? Reflexes are the definition of natural talent. If Roy has less technique than Floyd and is still as or more successful, that makes him more naturally talented.
Trouble??? This is boxing man.....the opponent has to earn his money too. Chavez...Castillo.....ODH.....Haton are all good fighters. RJJr. lost against guys who couldnt share a ring with Floyd...Floyd has NEVER loss. Or shown weakness...RJ Has.
Still, not as good as RJJ in that regard, and not as fast P4P, and not as successful against similar opposition. Again, if Roy is less technical than Floyd, than why was he even more successful against similar fighters? That's called talent.
Floyd has amazing reflexes AND the ability to block punches...Jones only had one of those...reflexes.
Every fighter has weaknesses. Floyd has shown weaknesses if you look closely: He has a tendency to become overly defensive He is somewhat vulnerable to the jab
RJJ showed weakness by age 30 or 31? When? Explain. When did RJJ lose when in his prime or by age 30 or so? I don't seem to recall. Let Floyd fight until he's 35 against bigger opposition and see how he does. The other fighters earned their money against Floyd, they got owned against Roy. Roy never even had trouble with anyone in his prime. He SCHOOLED Jame Toney, a better fighter than Floyd has ever even thougth about fighting, and beat Hopkins handily. Never had a troublesome opponent aside from Montell Griffin, who he KO'd in one in the rematch after getting DQ'd in the first. Floyd has unimpressive, close fights with much lesser guys. Guys Jones would;ve had out of there like nothing.
"Overly defensive".......I dont see how that is a problem.....he has dominated EVERY fighter he has fought other than Castillo the first time because he had a torn rotator cuff and early in the ODH fight against a giant 165 pounder with great skills in oscar. Part of the scoring in boxing involves defense......thats like saying someone in football is too fast there is no such thing as too much defense..."protect yourselves at all times". Floyd is SMART....Thats what seperates him from RJ more than anything..smarts.
You're not reading my posts. You're in the wrong here, and are trying to cover up for it by only taking a small portion of what I say into consideration before giving a half-assed response. If RJJ only had reflexes and Floyd was better technicall and overall, then ANSWER ME THIS(and don't answer it if you can't, as you shouldn't be able to, considering it makes no sense): if Floyd is as good physically, and much better technically, then how does Roy deal with similar opponents so much easier and look so much better doing it? If Floyd had the reflexes and natural talent, he'd be able to do what Roy does, but better, given that he is better technically. So why was he unable to? Now seems a good time to concede in the argument, rather than continuing to dig yourself in a hole.
The toney fight is legit BUT Cmon Hopkins???..that fight was 15 years ago..Hopkins was green as hell. Floyd said it best" I will retire from boxing..not let boxing retire me". Floyd will not fight until hes 35 hes too smart for that.
