This content is protected I should say before I get started with the highlight how ****ing pissed off I was to find more than a couple 45-minute videos on the internet that claimed to be the first Gavilan-Bratton fight but were not. Listen people, never make a mistake like that. To the score: 1. Both boys were equal to the task. Bratton was more offensive than usual. There was plenty of fireworks to go around. Gavilan hurt Bratton with two separate right hands, then drove him into the ropes and beat him furiously, in a quite primitive matter I might add. Gavilan. 3. Funny that Bratton should wind up a right-hand bolo on Gavilan. Right after, Gavilan hurt Bratton a little, and an exciting exchange ensued. Even. 8. Gavilan put Bratton off-balance with a left hook. Bratton pulled some clever moves out of the bag that saved him the punishment he would have gotten from some of the Kid's wildest punches. Bratton. 15. Bratton was pretty bouncy, while the Kid stalked patiently. Bratton. Notes: 1. I believe Gavilan was the slightly more powerful of the two boxers. 2. Idk why this fight or any of the other fights that took place between Gavilan and Bratton were not more hyped up and why they are not discussed much now. This was an EXCELLENT matchup between two GREATS, 2 excellent and unorthodox boxers. This was probably one of the best matchups of the 50s and probably all welterweight history, yet no one mentions it. Shame on you serious boxing fans. 3. Lastly, and most importantly, ANYONE let me know if there is a longer version of this is found. Verdict: While it was nice to see some of the first fight, it was really no more than a tease. Four rounds, that's it. Once again, I have no verdict to render here.
Two great virtuosos of the ring and 2 of my favs. Though I think the Kid was probably a step or more better than HoneyBoy.
He wasn’t a brawler....but at the same time.. I wouldn’t pick any welterweight in history to outbrawl him
Hmmm...I actually thought Gavilan had huge brawling tendencies for someone with the amount of boxing skill he had. I totally agree. No welterweight would outslug the Kid.
Its a shame the Gavilan vs SRR fights dont exist on film i can only imagine the exchanges between those two ... must have been brutal.
Thanks for posting. Bratton in this was not faster with his hands than his opponent. The Kid just seemed to have better fundamentals, carrying his hands high which helps against a quick handed fighter. Bratton got caught quite a bit, I thought, and Gavilan has the best of what we see. Two excellent athlete's, tall for their weight and quick, but the more solid grounding tipped this one to Gavilan.
