This content is protected Only round 1, 4, 7, and 10 were shown in their entirety or almost in their entirety. The fight looked at least like a decent, close scrap from what I could see, with Gavilan getting the better of things. The commentator did a phenomenal job of commenting on the action. I can't remember ever hearing a more accurate commentary. He described it as a "tough, blistering scrap" which it was. The 10th was a good round. The Kid went on the war path, scoring with left hooks and right bolos alike. It's amazing to me how the bolo is the most telegraphed of any punch I've ever seen, yet Gavilan landed it so perfectly. Better than Leonard, better than Robinson, better than Ali, better than Napoles. Young occasionally retaliated in that 10th round, and Gavilan neatly ducking Young' punches. The 10th was a very action-packed, neatly fought round.
Great Gavilan performance, good looks... his head movement and efficiency in exchanges is phenomenal. In the 10th he was landing the bolo in the clinch and setting it up with jabs and feints so I wouldn’t say it’s telegraphed. Hard punch to defend with gloves up unless you are explicitly defending against it (and creating openings for other punches while doing so). Have you seen Gavilan-Gil Turner? The whole fight is on YouTube in color. Turner was a real contender at the time who had stopped Ike Williams and he gave it his all.
I have seen Gavilan-Turner a long long time ago. I will be watching it again soon though and will most definitely be posting on it. I am going chronologically, and am currently in 1951. That bout was in 1952, correct? So, not too far off.
Gavilan looked great. I thought the fight tactical and only all right to watch. Marty Glickman was the announcer. He was on the 1936 American Olympic team as a runner, I believe, but was not allowed to compete because he was Jewish and the American Olympic Committee bowed to Nazi pressure to not use him or our other Jewish athletes. Not one of our better moments. Glickman later became a first rate sports announcer. As for Paddy Young, he looked ordinary to me. Thanks for posting.
