If Kid had fought the other 'Sugar Ray at 147, how would this fight have gone? Would it have been a competitive affair?

Ultra competitive IMO. I do believe Gavilan wins a UD

I don`t think he was a better boxer and from what I read Ray Robinson had his hands full with Gavilan. Basilio may have beaten Leonard.

Although I rate Leonard a little higher, if there was a style he would have had an issue with it was Gavilan's. A busy, swarming, sharp (not hard) hitting fighter with an excellent jaw. Man, I wouldn't be one bit surprised to see Gavilan's hand raised after 15.

Tight tussles here. I'd lean toward Ray edging a series.

I Rate Ray as the best WW since Robinson begrudgingly. Very begrudgingly.
    Ray squeezes by on points.

Fair play for letting your head rule your heart, robert. Ray seems to get a lot of hate that overshadows the fact he beat Benitez, Hearns and Duran at welter and Hagler at middle (albeit controversially though I have no issue with a tight decision in his favour) despite only having had one fight in five years! Yes, Marvin was on the slide but Ray had had one fight in five years.

I get that people find him an arse but that is a hell of a CV.

this is a match between the second best Cuban welterweight vs the 3rd best welter ever. this could be a draw

Who was saying at the time that he was shot? He had just beaten Mugabi in brutal fashion and Mugabi was seen as a real threat. Maybe not prime but good enough to still have too much for the opponent he had always wanted.

Ray had had one fight, at welterweight, in five years. If there were concerns that one of the two was shot, it really wasn't Marvin.

Funny how you say Hagler was shot, when he had knocked out his no 1 contender in his last fight, and yet hold against Ray his defeat to Camacho when he was 41 and had had one (losing) fight in eight years. Talk about wanting to have your cake and eat it.
