I was reading an article by Monte Cox where he 'interviewed' figures form the past by matching together sources and making it a Q&A, it was quite interesting.

    Here is the link

    http://coxscorner.tripod.com/interview.html

In part 2 of the article he 'interviews' Nat Fleisher who claims the blow Ali landed on Liston was the Kid McCoy corkscrew.

Can anyone shed any light on this 'corkscrew'?

fleischer made a career out of talking crap and played a big part in ruining ali-liston 2.
he'd go down well on the classic forum as he'd say greb and ketchel are the best middles of all time and that jeffries would take ali out in one because he arm wrestled moose.

Funny thing, I just posted on that recent Bob Fitsimmions thread the story of Nat Fleischer vs Jimmy Jacobs feud/flare up in the early 60s Ring Magazine in re the old timers who Nat claimed were supermen vs the new.

The corkscrew punch was a straight punch from the shoulder. Upon impact mccoy would turn the punch over with a twist of his wrist and it was claimed that this enabled the punch to do more damage, particularly in terms of cuts. Turning the punch over is now standard in boxing except that the punch is turned over in mid flight as opposed to the time of impact.

Apparently the term the 'real mccoy' was coined in reference to Kid McCoy. McCoy's performance in beating Joe Choynski in 1899 overshadowed a lesser boxer named Peter McCoy, who had fought in San Francisco days earlier and inspired the newspaper headline 'Choynski Beaten By The Real McCoy'

The saying has stuck ever since.
