Hi fellas, :hey I'm a Muay Thai purist so I know very little about MMA, but I'm hoping someone can explain what the deal is with Kimbo Slice as I hear his name alot and he seems to attract alot of attention in and out of the fight world. This is not a troll thread, just honestly interested. Is he an MMA ATG?
No fella, the story of Kimbo is pretty simple. During the rise of internet videos and the like, he got famous around the globe for fights like this [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAc8uilEw40[/ame] Basically back yard brawls. He received an offer to fight in boxing but took up the offer to fight in MMA In his 1st fight, he took on ex boxer Ray Mercer in an exhibition fight [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DahOLe5z3Ek[/ame] He then signed for Elite XC, looking to capitalise on his fame, he quickly became the fame of the organisation after kod victories over James Thompson & Tank Abbot. With each fight against these has beens, he drew greater TV ratings than almost any other mainstream MMA show on American TV Then, in possibly the biggest fight in Elite XC history, Kimbo was due to face MMA legend Ken Shamrock. Put prior to the bout, Shamrock cut his eye during his warm up routine and was replace with former LHW Seth Petruzelli at extremely short notice, then this happened [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5ZxpbtcC8A[/ame] And then after the fight Seth came out with this comment So not only killing the Kimbo Slice hype, Seth also killed Elite XC's credibility as an org and leading to a Athletic Comission inquiry and Elite XC folded and filed for bankruptcy shortly after, never putting on another event So Kimbo was drafted into the cast of the UFC's Ultimate Fighter, where it was the same old ****. He was insanely hyped, drew record TV ratings for the show, but couldnt fight for ****, losing to eventual winner Roy Nelson in his 1st fight. He also ''fought'' Matt Mittrione and Houston Alexander in the UFC in two of the most pathetic excuses of fights I have ever witnessed Now he is trying the same con trick in boxing it seems, fighting a punch of no hoper's onto a big money fight where he will be embarrassingly exposed
Stoo must have been watching a different TUF10 to me, because it was hardly the same old **** as EliteXC. Hell they couldn't have been going further out of their way to say that Kimbo knew **** all and was learning the sport on the fly.
Stoo summed it all up; but round my way we thought he was a *****'ole when he was fighting smaller, intimidated opponents in back gardens and barely looking impressive. Gannon kicked his ass: that should've been the end of it!
Again you must have been watching a different tv show to me. Before the Nelson fight they hyped him as a big star (which he was) but they hardly suggested he was a good, let alone great, fighter which is what EliteXC had been doing.
Yep, put your handbags down Will, your right, they didnt overhype Kimbo at all. I must have imagined the episode where Dana stood there infront of the other contestants and said something along the lines of ''We have another guy for this season'' then brought Kimbo out WWE style...
You must have also missed me saying that they hyped him up as a big star, which was perfectly legitimate as he was then the biggest television draw the sport has seen. Might still be to be honest, as terrifying a thought as that is. All I was saying is that pretending the UFC was hyping Kimbo like EliteXC is simply not true. They were not positioning him as the greatest fighter in the world as EliteXC were...the whole point he was on TUF was because White said he wasn't good enough to be in the UFC proper. Whereas EliteXC was trying to pretend he was the second coming of Mike Tyson
Well you must have been reading a different post to what I wrote as I was simply implying that he got the attention and hype due to his fame rather than his abilities as a fighter and I didnt even mention that Elite XC were hyping Slice up to be the best in the world, let alone the UFC. They werent hyping him as badly as Elite XC, but it was still hype non the less Let's be honest, he was put on the show to draw viewers in. It was just a cynical dollar grab by Zuffa having him on that show. Either Kimbo won it and they'd have a ready made star, or the guy he beat would be put over Either way Zuffa had. But I guess we are in agreement on that part I was just tryna sum up his career as basically as possible for the TS, I didnt expect some sort of Spanish Inquisition
To be fair, I don't think the Spanish Inquisition would be as feared if their main instrument of terror was a two sentence post on an internet message board. But yeah I think we're in agreement and I read too much into a throwaway line in your original post.
