I have a bad ankle so have to wear a ankle brace, but I don't feel enough support and I heard taping it reduces movement of joints and tendons which has a higher chance of injury. I saw some athletes use this method of taping in which they tape around the muscle and give support, but I don't buy I can't see how that helps with support. Anybody have self experience with this. Would like some feedback.
What's wrong with your ankle? A brace or tape isn't going to do anything for you, the longer you wear either the worse for you it is. Tape is far better for supporting your ankle when you need it, used when you need to play and you were just recently injured. I'm not sure what you mean by taping around the muscle, with the tape there is a technique using a figure 8 which is commonly used. There is no evidence that tape or an ankle brace can help prevent injury, it's generally accepted now that they do more harm than good. They mess up the proprioception of your ankle leaving you exposed to reinjury. Get a wobble board and use that, walk ankle to toe in a straight line like you are on a tight rope, stand on one leg and close your eyes. Those sort of things will help your ankle, not a brace. You need to improve your ankle, not protect it from the world unless you've injured it in the last week or so.
I broke my ankle around 3 months ago I do alot of streching and movements for my ligaments and tendons to become flexiable again. I only where a brace when I know I am going to do alot of walking(school). My Orthopedic said that I am going to need some type of support when I start doing some physical activities, so thats why I'm asking about this taping method.
Breaking a bone isn't so serious, a break heals up relatively quickly. A ligament injury can take up to 12 months to fully recover from. Do you know to what extent your ligaments were injured, did the doctor who treated you give you a grading? Go see a physio or sports trainer if you want to learn how to tape your ankle properly, 3 months in it shouldn't be much of a worry though in my opinion and as I said there is no evidence that taping/bracing can prevent further injury. I certainly wouldn't recommend a brace just for walking, even if it's uncomfortable you're not going to aggravate anything (unless you walk for 20 miles for some reason). You don't want to jump straight back into any intense activity, you need to work your way back by getting some stability and proprioceptive feedback into your ankle before progressively strengthening it. Have you been given exercises to do? I did something probably quite similar to what you did a few years ago, playing footy in inappropriate footwear after a few drinks I landed awkwardly and broke a bone in my ankle with pretty severe ligament damage (surgery not required thankfully) so I know it's a hard slog getting back, you need to be patient and do the right things with something like this. Get a wobble board if you don't have one and use it often.
They gave me a couple of exercises like standing on the balls of my foot. I wasn't given the degree of demage on my ligaments, but they're still stiff can't really lift my foot upwards I can move it from side to side and downwards.I also didn't need surgery. Do you have any pain or soreness now and if you box did it affect you in anyway; do you still box. My uncle had a similar injury as mine, same bone(Talus); and told me that it took him 3 months after they removed hes cast and recoverd full ankle movement. I've have 1 1/2 months since they removed my cast I walk with no limp, but thats it I can't run, jump and squat or bend my legs.
