i was a a huge Khan fan (“his wife hasn’t had plastic surgery—she’s just wearing a spot of makeup!”) up until just after Algeiri fight, which is about when he stopped fighting and just became famous for being famous—remember in the tabloid-reading UK, celebrity takes a long time to wear off

why accounts for his media status which are you argue far exceeds his skills? Probably a few things: good fortune to have been born in a massive boxing market, silver medal in the olympics, and mediagenic (handsome; not articulate but at least loquacious).

i think Khan plateaued with the Maidana, McCloskey, Judah trilogy (all at LWW); the latter of which was in 2011, i think--six years ago.

 

That was possibly his peak, or maybe the Collazo fight in 2014 at 147. He showed more skills in that fight than usual, moved with more purpose, his combos were better placed than those ugly arm flurries he often did, he didn't do that awful 1-2 where he would practically fall onto his opponent after throwing the right hand.

He definitely held too much, but overall was looking like a more skillful fighter. Then the fight with Algeri showed once again how he gets flustered out of his game plan and resorts to poor instincts/habits.

Overall he had a nice career given his limitations and flaws, but the fact that people spoke of him with so much potential shows how much people overrate speed. People do the same **** with Broner. His potential and physical gifts are overrated. Broner has fast hands but not fast movement nor impressive defensive reflexes. He's moderately talented for a top fighter.
