A list describing the supplements and medications that light heavyweight Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal used prior to his appearance at "Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine" points to a single product as the cause of his positive steroid test.

In a letter sent this past Saturday to the Nevada attorney general's office, Lawal's rep, Mike Kogan, stated that an over-the-counter testosterone supplement, S-Mass Lean Gainer, contains a chemical precursor to Drostanolone.

That's the steroid that recently landed the fighter in hot water.

"Ultimately an athlete is responsible for what he/she puts in their body, and Mr. Lawal's intent is not to shift blame or find an excuse," stated the letter, of which MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) obtained a copy. "His intent was to figure out for himself what may have caused this positive test so that he can make proper adjustments to his supplement list and avoid this nightmare in the future."

The letter states Lawal used the supplement on three separate occasions over a period of 20 months to combat pain and instability in his knee following multiple knee injuries. Upon discovering a third torn ACL, he discontinued its use but did not withdraw from the fight.

 What a crock. Let me guess he figured out it was himself? Does he really expect anyone to believe that his apparent medication came laced with Drostanolone?

Supplement, not medication. Incredibly in America supplements aren't tested by FDA and there are often problems with them being laced with prohibited substances.

However to me this does sound like a crock. The substance hasn't bee on the market in over eighteen months becomes of issues surrounding it being laced with something akin to Drostanolone. So we're meant to believe that a fighter just uses a random supplement he bought over eighteen months ago when preparing for a fight. And he had apparently recently moved house which makes it even less likely he'd still have the stuff laying around.

No. I'm sorry you're wrong. They do. Its a real problem in America. There is no testing of this stuff before its put on the shelves and that means companies can and do add **** in to improve the performance of the results. Sometimes they just put it in the early batches so it gets a good rep.

Look at the website for the supplement in question - https://sites.google.com/site/steelbodysupplements/products/s-mass. It very clearly says it has NOT been evaluated by the FDA.

I agree his excuse sounds bogus but its based somewhat on fact. To me I think he googled a supplement that had been accused of being tainted and is desperately trying to pin the blame on that.

I know they get punched alot, but ALL these fighters are taking these supplements without checking the labels. But they are all innocent victims of poor packaging...Im sure...no reason to doubt it...happens to a large percentage of drug cheats...I mean honest pros...

Exactly. Which is why I don't believe Mo's story. An athlete of his credentials knows better than to just take supplements without checking.

I know the FDA are not a fraction as stringent as over here in blighty but i'm not buying that. I refuse to believe point blank that a nation as large as the US can sell products for HUMAN consumption that have had no testing when the supply of steroid unless prescribe by a physician is illegal. That makes no logical common sense and is simply insanity. Off the shelf products are NOT supposed to contain any hormones of ANY sort and frankly thats a poor excuse from Lawal as he should know exactly what he's putting in his mouth.

I know its incredible but since 1994 that's been the case. If the FDA doesn't test this **** then nobody is. Again doesn't corroborate Mo's story or even condone his actions if its true (ignorance of the rules is no excuse for breaking them, etc) but tainted supplements are an issue in America.

Didn't cyborg say the same thing? whether true or not every competitor that's get's caught will throw that excuse out there. If this really happens and i was an athlete taking "suppliments" I sure as hell would check before use. Losing a year of your career and everything else that goes with it can't be good for a career.

Here in Australia my mate who owns large chain of supplement stores has just recently been given 7days to hand in 3 types of very popular up until now thought to be ALL NATURAL test boosters from America...

These r over the counter in America and the world..But have traces on one single ingredient that give u a dirty urine result...Im very lucky as i was taking one of these products before last fight and didnt get tested..I would of been labelled a steroid cheat from un-educated people of the likes found on this forum most of the time...

People hear banned substance and think its some crazy german 80's olympic type **** when the product i was taking is 99percent natural with this miniscule amount of a banned substance in it...That really without it in the product would still do the same..It didnt give me these hulk like abilities or suddenly make me 10 times better fighter..

the main issue with supplements sold and distributed in the U.S is that they sometimes don't contain actual amounts listed on a label, usually they may contain less, or have substitutes, poor fillers or preservatives in order to save the manufacture money. Ive never really heard that they taint it with steroids or precursors to, with exception to Balco designers (costing thousands), especially anything that would make it more expensive to produce.

Since when the US are logical... ?
They have been butchering all there watchdog for 30 years now. One main focus of the republican party is to take out whatever regulation exist so that corporation can do and sell whatever they want.

There is always the kind of debate in the lounge and most of the time you get people saying that regulation are a waste of time because who would be dumb enough to use lead based paint for kids toy...

Well you got you answer right there !

If you want to take 1 hour and a half to check to movie Bigger, Stronger, Faster it's a good documnetary on the subject

Bull****. Fighters need to stop crying and accept what goes in their body as it is their body. This is no difference then Margoritio claiming ignorance as plaster of paris is applied to his hand!

If someone like King Mo wants to claim ignorence then get your nutrionist to sign a contract accepting 100% responsibility for what goes in his body. Not sure if that is possible but "supplements" are a bull**** excuse. No fighter should take any supplement without THOROUGH research.

But that's just insane. In effect you have a product that may not be fit for human consumption being sold off the shelf. How on earth does that stand up in ANY court of law?
Over here i know we are much stricter on this. I remember a few years back when Ephedrine was a banned substance and that may still be the case im not sure - as it was connected to a series of Cardiac cases some even resulting in death. The US FDA though choose to make the substance legal and didn't bat an eyelid at it.
