I forgot to mention him, but yes he can be very clever. I enjoy hearing tarver talk, he can be clever without being completely insulting too
Not denying Ali was a great trashtalker, some of his lines were superb, but (and I'll probably get stick for this) I honestly think if other boxers had came out with some of the other lines (the chiller thriller gorilla Manilla one - I honestly dont get why that is witty) that he used, people would say they were ****.
why isnt naseem hamed mentioned yet, he is one of the top guys. the way I see it on top you have: -ali/hamed quick witted funny cocky -mayorga insane madman trashtalk -floyd/toney: loudmouths
It was to do with the times. Nowadays that stuff would be considered lame. Concepts of what is witty change over time. (Although some stuff is timeless, like Tex Cobb's quotes)
This was ignorance. Not entertainment! There's a big difference between that kinda **** and " I'm gonna beat the gorilla in the thrilla in Manilla!" Big difference between bi-polar, manic depressive rampages ( not Jackson MMA heads) like Tyson had at the end of his career and "Float like a butterfly sting like a bee!"
Naz Always toungue in cheek, always for the cameras as he never had any malice in his heart My favourite was the one with Kevin Kelly "Listen, right when this fight is over, forget about boxing, I'm gonna get you a job putting my posters up in times square. Forget about boxing, just concentrate on putting my posters up, make sure there are no creases in them, make sure they they're nice and clean and straight and make my ass look fine"
I remember this one well Floyd - "I weigh 147 how much do you weigh? I weigh 147 how much do you weigh?" Ricky - "About 174!" It was so funny, even Mayweather was starting to crack up
Mayorga for me the fact he doesn't speak a word of English makes it even funnier. James Toney should get a mention and the stuff he said before his MMA fight last year was hilarious.
mayorga was probably the funniest Ali was probably the nastiest, I think he really enjoyed getting into peoples heads and ruining them. He really ruined fraizer and foreman mentally. He made it personal more than any other fighter I can think of. I mean guys like Tyson and Mayorga say the foulest things they can think of but it still ends up being funny and 99% of the time the opponent laughs it off as its expected.
it was great for promotion but I dont think it really helped him in either fight, frazier hated him because of the things he said and it made him more determined to win, not liston, patterson style intimidated, foreman didnt seem to give a **** about whatever ali said, allthough ali did get to him during the fight saying how soft his punches were.
