Contracts signed by Kevin "THE KINGPIN" Johnson to fight Anthony Joshua on January 31, 2015 at the O2 Arena (Millenium Dome), in Greenwich, London, United Kingdom. Joshua and Johnson spent time in the Wladimir Klitschko camp together, and have sparred on numerous occasions. So, who wins & how...???
I was pretty big fan of Johnson's several years back and really thought he could be a top heavyweight. He had all the talent but ultimately lacked the drive to ever reach his potential. With Joshua's lack of experience and all of Johnson's experience, skill, jab, etc you'd think Johnson has a real shot at an upset here. But he won't. He'll probably just hang in and do as little as possible and end up going the distance but losing by decision. Joshua by decision.
Frustrating part of Johnson is, he has the physical tools to be great. But he lacks the mental toughness to match. Plus Johnson let his old management screw him big time, first by signing with Star Boxing, which did nothing but hamper his career. Johnson had opportunities to fight Chagaev, Peter, Tua, Holyfield and Star Boxing declined those options and ended up matching him up with Devin Vargas (after Monte Barrett got injured), Julius Long, Matthew Greer....what does that do for someone's career...???
I agree. He had all the skill and talent but lacked the mentality to do more. Real shame, he could have been a really good heavyweight. He would have probably beaten all those guys you mentioned if he got the shot and actually put in the effort. Since I was once a fan of his I'd be somewhat happy if he pulled the upset against Joshua but ultimately I'll be pulling for Joshua since he's a future star(potentially) while Johnson's near the end of his career.
Kingpin has a good jab and had vitali looking a bit beat up post fight but his problem is once he tastes a bit of power he's happy to go into a shell and survive for 12 rounds. You would think by now joshua will stop kingpin and as they sparred in the kitchko camp his handlers must know it's an easy nights work but.... Not so long ago kingpin did take out leapai with a bodyshot so there is always a sense of danger there. My money is on joshua by points and to be fair he needs the rounds.
