I agree,Thats what I said to Kingsley,"We've heard this before"and nothing came of it. I do know that Kirk is close to Goosen, and they have spoke several times before about Kirk-Toney. I think we might see kirk fight in Dec.but I have my doubts it will be against anyone of note.
Johnson has been out for so long, I have forgotten what he looks like, much less how good/bad he was.
Except this time he wouldn't be facing top competition, he'd be facing Kirk Johnson. A 36-year-old with a flaky temperament, a tendancy towards fat, by December almost 3 year's worth of ring rust, and a history of blowing his opportunities. That's really rough on Johnson but true. Ever since his godawful go-around with Ruiz I have been resolutely unimpressed in him. If Toney doesn't breeze it, retirement should beckon. Kirk's going to have to up his game to his best in years to be even competative, he should be made to order for Toney.
I don't really understand why it has taken Johnson this long to get back in the ring (if it's even real). What gives?
I was referring to Tony Thompson. According to recent news last week on maxboxing, Toney and Thompson agreed on the principle terms of their respective contract. It really looks good for Thompson-Toney in December .To me, Thompson is top opposition. I do not know where the rumor about Toney-Johnson came up. I have never read about such a matchup which does not make any sense for Toney anyway at this point his career..
So we have a speculative thread with absolutely no verification at all...a first for ESB. It makes no sense for Toney to take on someone like Kirk. Johnson has been a non-factor in the heavyweight division for years. He's all risk, zero reward. Thompson makes much more sense. He at least has the cache of being a contender for years and putting up a somewhat decent fight against Wlad. He's also a fighter that even an old, shot Toney may be able to beat.
At this stage of Kirk's career,I think he likes the idea of being a pro fighter. The idea of being a fighter and actually fighting though are two differant things.
I aboutely agree with you. Thompson is a much more credible opponent than Johnson. And yes, this thread is purely speculative. I am sure there has never been any talk with Johnson as no source has been indicated. The scene of boxing and maxboxing have been reporting about serious negotiations with Thompson. This also makes more sense. But neverthless, I guess people here will continue to discuss the Toney-Johnson fight.
come on man....okay look at johnsons resume then and tell me what he has accomplished...toney destroyed holyfield, beat ruiz, fought two tough fights with peter and beat jirov who is a hw now...I am not saying he is great (he was for sure) but what does kirk johnson bring to the table? esp after 3 years
There are people on this thread who know Kirk and his family VERY well. Sure nothing has been reported, sure he may not even be fighting Toney, but this is what it was said to be in the first post. A rumor heard from one of Kirk's family members. At the very least for those who would like to see Kirk resume his carreer... this is a good sign.
I wouldn't mind seeing Kirk fight again because if healthy (and he's had a long enough layoff where he's probably as healthy as he can get) he might be able to get in the mix. However, I would think he should start out with some c level fights. Tho I'm not convinced of Toney's continued viability as a legit hw contender, toney may be more than kirk could handle right now.
