RIP Kirkland. Condolences to his loved ones. When it came to sheer talent he was up there with the very best. Shame that the two words most mentioned about his career were always "If Only" Nonetheless he was always a joy to watch.
I’ve just watched the Duran fight again. Now of course it wasn’t Duran in there as we know him, he was on a downer in his career at the time, but I’d forgotten despite what the judges thought how easily Laing handled him. He obviously got himself right for that fight, but what happened? His next fight was a whole year later when he returned to the States reverted to type and got sparked by Fred Hutchings after a lack lustre performance.
That's the milllon pound question Cecil. If only he could have kept that mindset and maybe got himself a title shot. Who knows?
I just thought after such a good win they would have kept him active and built up some momentum. Just his next fight was almost exactly 12 months later, a long time for a fella like him to get distracted.
I try and avoid the what ifs? with these exceptional talented but flawed types. I tend to assume their talent came with their flaws; without one, you do not get the other. From what I saw of Laing from a very long distance, I get the impression he had many happy years, that I doubt he would change.
Kirkland liked to go missing and partied a lot for days on end. In those days people could easy go missing no mobiles then. From what I remember he would turn up skint and try to get a fight for money then go and party, the trainers had to go and drag him to the gym Total 1 off was laing, a great guy
