Anyone else pissed the ref stopped it? It's not like Julio wasn't landing any punches and it's not like he was getting beaten across the ring. Kirkland was winning, but it was very competitive. I hate it when really good fights like that end in such a dissatisfying way.
He took Julio's best shots like they were nothing, until fighters can't prevent his pressure and power they're going to have trouble with him, but he is very easy to hit. If Julio had fought like he did in the 5th round he could've won on points, someone like Shane Mosley or Paul Williams would beat him, but as long as he stayed away from elite fighters I can see him reigning as a belt holder.
The thing about it is Angulo is slower than Julio, doesn't hit as hard, and has a worse chin. The people who say Angulo would knock out Kirkland, I don't see that happening. I think Kirkland blitzes him. Of course he would lose to Williams, Forrest, and maybe Cory Spinks but that's about it.
First of all Julio's corner stopped the fight, another thing, this was NOT competitive Julio ran out of gas and was too tired to come out, in other words he was gonna get KTFO, every one even a blind man could see it coming, I don't know how you could miss it.
Robert Guererro ND El Chino Latino after a butt in round 2. Victor Ortiz TKO2 Mike Arnoutis James Kirkland TKO7 Joel Julio after corner stoppage
Julio and his corner weren't protesting, I think it was a joint decision. Julio was out on his feet damn there at the end of the round, he'd been holding for a few rounds. He was going to get KTFO. Sure, we all wanted to see that.. but then again Julio lives on for another day.
If you rewatch it, you will hear Julio say "I dont want to fight anymore" And the ref was in the corner checking on him at that very second and that is why the fight was stopped.. I was shocked that Julio landed some bombs on Kirkland and couldnt even get him to take a backwards step...After watching that fight I dont think that any of the current belt holders at 154 can hold him off...None of them at that good of boxers...Williams and Martinez would give him fits, Williams if he fights at range, and Martinez because of the way that he is able to make guys turn and reset...Kirkland would steamroll the others...Funny thing is the people that were picking Julio are the one saying that Kirkland is nothing....I think tonight we saw one sure fire superstar in Ortiz(Maybe biased we were both born in Liberal Kansas:good ) and both grow up in Cali..Odd since Liberal only has about 20,000 people. And one action fighter that will, if matched right, bring some excitiment to an otherwise fairly weak weightclass. Kirkland will win a belt, I see him as a more active, tougher version of Jeff Lacy. The big difference is he can land an effective jab.
I was dissapointed in Guererro, I felt that he was hurt by a shot in the second round and really pushed hard to get that fight stopped...:verysad
