Amir Khan vs Marcos Maidana- Amir Khan by UD Victor Ortiz vs Lamont Peterson- Victor Ortiz by UD Vic Darchinyan vs Abner Mares- Abner Mares by KO Yonnhy Perez vs Joseph Agbeko II - Yonnhy Perez by UD Alright, kicking things off let's start with the Victor Ortiz and Lamont Peterson fight. It should be a decent fight a very technical fight. I'm not expecting a barnburner or anything like that, but It should be a good fight between two hungery young fighters. Victor Ortiz has been active since his first real loss in his career and has faced quality names such as Nate Campbell and Vivian Harris on his road to redemption. While the same cannot be said for Lamont Peterson. Lamont Peterson, like Ortiz a highly touted prospect, suffered his first defeat last year on Showtime against Tim Bradley. Since then he has only had one fight against Journeyman Damian Fuller, and stopped him in round 7 back in April. So, two highly touted prospects dubed as "the future" both suffered their first loss in recent years, but both have taken different routs after their first losses. Who will come out on top in this fight? Well, I've got Victor Ortiz by UD, may'be even a late stoppage. First few rounds I'd expect Ortiz to fight off his back foot with Peterson coming forward. Then in the mid to late rounds may'be Ortiz throws his hands a bit more hurts Peterson a couple of times, but Peterson's toughness, heart, and hunger gets him to the finish line with a pretty wide UD, around the 117-111 range. Then we got Amir Khan and Marcos Maidana and I gotta say this will be a very easy fight for Khan. I just see Khan easily boxing Maidana from the outside using his size, speed, footwork to easily outbox Maidana to a UD...Khan may get a stoppage from the ref or the corner. Khan just flat out knocking out Maidana I sure as hell don't see happening just like Maidana outboxing Khan would be a shock. So, anyway, Maidana only has one chance and everybody knows what that is his power somehoe connecting to Khan's chin, but really odds like that are very slim considering how big Khan is and Khan is always keeping his hands up now. So, I'll take Khan by wide UD winning every round and may'be stopping Maidana in the championship rounds because of a ref stoppage or corner stoppage. Also, just to put percentages on it I would say 85% Khan decision 10% that Khan stops Maidana and a 5% chance Maidana KO's Khan. Then we got the juicey Showtime card featuring the Bantamweights; Abner Mares, Vic Darchinyan, Yonnhy Perez, and Joesph Agbeko. First up is Abner Mares vs Vic Darchinyan. We'll start with the youngin Abner Mares, Mares was a successful amateur fighter and that has carried over to his pro game. He is undefeated at 20-0-1 with 13 KOs. His resume isn't really beefy. No really stepping stone journeyman nor any really quality fighters, that's why to me in his last fight against Yonnhy Perez I was a bit surprised, well not only was he fighting somebody like Yonnhy Perez, but that he actually held his own and fought to a draw back in May on the undercard of the Vazquez-Marquez IV. The only real quality names he has on his resume before the Perez fight Isidro Garcia, Jonathan Aries and may'be throw in Diosdado Gabi, and that's really about it and then he jumped in head first to fight Yonhhy Perez. I can't really say enough on how impressive that is. Ok, and then we got the Raging Bull Vic Darchinyan. I think we all know about Dachinyan, exciting fighter, awkward fighter, and devastating KO power. His got a great resume full of nice scalps Irene Pacheco, Luis Maldonado, Dmitry Kirllov, Cristian Mijares, and Jorge Arce. Along with losses to Nonito Donaire and Joesph Agbeko. Ok, so now that there is a little background on these fighters how will this fight go? Well, let me start off that I couldn't help but smile at the odds I saw on some betting site. I've got Abner Mares pretty much dominating Vic Darchinyan in the middle to late rounds and knocking him out in the championship rounds. Abner Mares has a great jab, nice boxing ability, good defense, and nice head movement that will frustrate Darchinyan and he will walk into a hard Abner Mares counterpunch that will send him to the canvas. I just don't see Darchinyan winning this fight. I think Mares will be comfortable and win surprisingly easy in most people's eyes. Then we got last years FOTY canidate that went a bit unnoticed. It was a great fight and I expect that this one will be on that same level, but may'be a bit closer this go around. There were a lot of things Agbeko didn't do against Perez that he normally does and that is use lots of head movement. He didn't have any head movement against Perez and that pretty much cost him as he was getting tagged and countered all night. I think though with all that said I think Yonnhy Perez is the better fighter and he will prove that yet again and beat Joseph King Kong Agbeko based on having better boxing ability overall. Everything Agbeko does well, Perez does a bit better, except for punching power, but even then Perez isn't too far behind Agbeko. So, I'm another showdown between Yonnhy Perez-Abner Mares II in the finals. Should be an epic night make sure you gotta a plan or a DVR and try not to miss these terrific fights on saturday night. :good
I was completely ready to put my name down for Mares by UD. But just to make sure, I went back and took some looks at him once again to freshen up as the last I had seen of him was the night he fought Perez. And there is just some things there that I dont like in this matchup with Vic (I am rooting for Vic but trying to keep an unbias outlook here) and I simply dont feel comfortable taking eather guy to win it at the moment. I think perhaps I am overrating Vic in all honesty, and I do feel that Mares should be able to win this. But I actually think it depends on what Vic turns up..... if he looks sharp in there on Sat night, I think Mares could be in for a long night, we will see. I cant pick on this fight because there are certain things screaming at me not to pick Mares, but I cant pick Darch due to all the things that should be in Mares favor in the matchup here. Khan vs Maidana is one of those fights where Khan has the ability, tools, and coach, to make this fight look like a mismatch early on. He can dominate this soundly, for the first 7 rounds or so. But I question Khans ability to weather the storm once it gets late, and I also want to see how Khan reacts to getting hit. He is bound to get tagged in this fight, and I just want to see how he reacts when that happens.... that moment will be a big one come saturday night, and will fortell Maidanas chances. I think having Pac as a training partner, and Roach as a coach, will be huge in this fight. I think this is the type of fight where sometimes the star fighter can find themselves in deeper and deeper water, but I think Roach puts his fighters through enough adversity in sparring and training to build structure in his fighters for those times. All I know is that, this will be one of the best nights of boxing we have had this year, and I cant wait to sit down, and hear the bell to that first fight and just soak it all up. I love boxing and it doesnt get much better then this. Props to each of these 8 fighters for taking fights like this during a time where boxing is getting some bad press for some of the fights NOT happening. Hope everyone enjoys the fights, I will get the Khan vs Maidana page up tomorrow.
Joseph Agbeko: “This tournament is going to be the best because the bantamweight division is the most exciting. I expect a war against Perez. With bantamweights, there are always lots of explosions.” Yonnhy Perez: “I have to thank SHOWTIME for making this tournament a reality. This is very important because we know that the winner of this tournament will be a very significant fighter. “There’s only one thing I’m waiting for: the bell on Saturday night.”
Vic Darchinyan: “Mares is good. I’ve seen his fights. He’s strong. He’s fast. But on the night of the fight, I’ll slow him. I’ll take away his strengths. You will see a new Vic Darchinyan, hungry and motivated like a young fighter. “I go for the knockout. It’s exciting. It’s what people want to see. It’s simple.” Abner Mares: “I know every boxer says that they just had the best camp of their life but this really has been a tremendous camp for me. I’m ready. I know I’m ready. “As bantamweights, we are fighters known to throw a lot of punches. We’re known for making fights exciting.”
This content is protected Maidana – “This is a very important fight for my career, but not the hardest.” Khan – “This is a big fight for me. My dream was always to fight in Las Vegas and having my name lit up on the strip. This time has come for me at the age of 24-years-old. Maidana is a big threat in this division but it’s my time. It’s going to be a big night and I want to end the year with fireworks.”
