I wonder what you guys here think about Rigo's win over Donaire this weekend. I had him a clear winner 8 to 4, 115-112 due to the KD round, but I had trouble scoring a lot of rounds who I thought were very close. It was a pretty tentative fight, with very few punches landed and it kinda reminded me of Valuev vs Haye only 3 levels better in the quality department. So I can't really see a "schooling" like many here on ESB, and I also the 118-109 like scores are completely bogus, wich mean Rigo won every round besides the KD one. The best man won, and beating the #4 P4P is a great feat on it's own, but it wasn't really a masterclass I think. Therefor the method used was to negative, and too few clear punches were scored by the winner. Now I'll sit back and let the shitstorm come over me... Bring it guys! :bbb
It looked like a sparring session to me. After the ninth round i thought that Rigo just fights a little bit over his opponents level. Donaire proved to me again that he is unable to adapt in the ring. When i look at the two fighters footwork then it seems like Donaire has none. Rigo took well timed steps that kept him on balance and did not use that much movemen. Donaire would do these small skips while most of the time he would stand up straight :conf. Thats why i think it was so much easier for Rigo to slip Donaires punches and make sure that Donaire could not drag him into a war. Probably one of the most exciting performances i have yet seen. Bob Arum is a piece of ****. Oh and 9-3
I agree on the footwork thing. There was a moment that Rigo looked like he was mocking Donaire's lack of it, when he did a couple of fancy steps back and forth at the ropes. You don't do that to a fighter with good footwork because you will pay dearly for that. Sorry, I'm really missing the excitement factor of this bout. Hence my SNV vs Haye with superior skills comparison. What else is new?! I can see that...
For me personally, I had it 10-2, maaaaaybe 9-3.... Just imo, but I thought Rigo did an amazing job in there given his opponent. He did get too negative for my taste there for a few rounds, but redeemed it by taking back control of the fight after Nonito dropped him to win the 12th round huge. Things that impressed me very much (taken from another post I made earlier) - Controlled the distance - Defense was superb - Counterpunching on point - Ring Generalship/footwork - Energy control was masterful - Controlled the action - Keeping it together and taking back momentum after being dropped (not a skill but an invaluable intangible) Keep in mind this wasn't a baldomir or chavez jr in front of him. This was an explosive p4p fighter, and one who was larger then him. To do this as the smaller man against a relatively high level fighter as Nonito had me applauding him. Imo what we saw was a very rare thing (Beating a non faded, top 5 p4p fighter that was also the bigger man). ----------------- Maybe if I rewatched it I would see it a little more down to earth but for me, given the size difference AND the quality of opponent, was a beautiful display of boxing from Rigo and an elite caliber win. Might rewatch the fight soon, maybe Ill feel differently but that's imo at least for now.
