Can't believe some people think that the stoppage was bad last night. Abner Mares was done after the first knockdown. If anything I thought Reiss did a fine job asking Mares the right questions and giving him the chance to continue fighting.

I didn't think it was a bad stoppage, but I wouldn't have minded the ref counting to 10 on the second knock down and assessing him then. He called it at 3, when Mares was trying to get up.

But I thought the ref did great at asking the questions, voicing himself clearly and assessing everything.

Def not a bad stoppage, but given the fight and the context, personally I would have liked to see him give a full standing count for the 2nd knockdown.

But no complaints for me, I can see why he stopped it as Mares looked out of it.

Need to find out if vegas will have it available to bet on and if the odds will be worth it.

It's pretty much a down week; if you want to save yourself the bother of poring over the schedules for at least the first week and use mine for a guideline, I doubt you'll find anything more to squeeze from it than what I put in the Rummy's Challenge list:

Skimpy, but the few major televised matches we're getting make up for their scarcity with the promise of being close & fun:

It's a small list this week, not much action going on - but I wouldn't call it particularly easy. Pound for pound and pick for pick the degree of difficulty is actually probably higher than usual.

Hernandez vs. Kakutani - both have power...and chins that can be cracked. The champ has more power (at least more proven on the world stage) and the better chin - but all it takes is one punch...

Berchelt vs. Cruz - major prospect here, but in a big step up taking on a still pretty scrappy former champ without having been tested much yet. Cruz is known for his toughness, in fact his ring name literally translates to "hard-ass Indian guy" or something. :yep Fortuna did manage to recently drop & stop him early, however, so maybe the armor is dented beyond use by now. If they go the distance, Cruz has lots more experience winning rounds, especially late...

Collazo vs. Sanchez - this one is fascinating, maybe the biggest toss-up of the week. On the surface it may not look to some like a worthy successor to Jacobs vs. Lorenzo as main event of the sophomore edition of "Fox Sports 1 Monday Night Boxing". If you just glanced at Boxrec and had never heard of Sanchez you might write this off as just a former titlist several years removed from glory picking on someone with an unimpressive record. However, some of us in Rummy's Challenge have been following Sanchez's rise for some time. Read David Fanning's thoughts here, shortly before the rematch with Artemio Reyes: http://www.boxingforum24.com/showthread.php?p=12574749#post12574749 - in which Reyes got KTFO in 1 wit his only prior loss being a competitive four-rounder with Mike Dallas Jr. very early in their careers. Since the Sanchez rematch, Reyes has gone 5-0 (4) and climbed into the WBC top 25. Collazo fought well at the upper echelons until 2009 when he lost controversially to still-unbeaten Andre Berto. In the ensuing almost five years, his form has declined sharply. All Collazo has to show for his work in that period is stoppages of three cans (all pushing double-digits in their stoppage loss stat column), getting dropped and outpointed by hard-punching but slower-than-molasses Freddy "El Riel" Hernandez, and going life and death on the non-televised undercard of the Garcia vs. Morales II PPV with extremely light-hitting Steve Upsher Chambers in a contest much closer than what the official cards show. Chambers got mauled last week by Eddie Gomez on the FS1 Monday Night Fights premiere. Having said all that, Collazo is a different galaxy of class from anyone Sanchez has yet shared the ring with. This one is a thinker.

Kameda vs. Guerrero - despite the reputation for corruption that enshrouds the Kameda clan, we've actually seen Daiki lose three world title matches fair & square in the past on his native soil - two of them against foreigners. Guerrero is the better fighter, and does possess a bit of savvy in the ring despite being most remembered for plucky display of bravery in never going down at the hands of Vic Darchinyan though he walked through a minefield (of which more than half the mines detonated, flush...). He should prove more skilled than Daiki, who is the weakest Kameda brother by far. However, the Cat is highly inconsistent and was made to look clueless at times by Juan Carlos Sanchez Jr. in his most recent defeat last February. Wild offense and relying on his chin will crack the door open for a hometown decision if Kameda even seems to be more landing more accurately or more often...even if Guerrero is getting in the higher-quality licks.

Nashiro vs. Kaovichit - if this actually ends up happening and not getting rescheduled yet again. Nashiro's strange meteoric career - which saw him Japanese champ in his 6th pro bout and world champ in his 8th - in some ways parallels and in others runs in stark contrast with Kaovichit's. The gangly-armed but diminutive Thai boxer debuted in a 12-rounder for the Pan Asian title which he then defended seventeen times before graduating to a world title opportunity. He failed, knocked out by Eric Morel, then recaptured the PABA title, defended it another sixteen times against middling regional-grade opposition - and once more tried for a world title...and failed again, drawing with Sakata. Guess what he did next? Yep, reclaimed the PABA title. :yep He then eschewed defenses and went straight into his next try, knocking out Sakata in the rematch to become WBA champ. He defended it twice, beating Daiki Kameda in his backyard..but lost the rematch. Time for another quick PABA reign! Just one defense, and ready for a world title challenge, now at super fly...only to get blown out in a minute flat by El Nica Concepcion. Bring on PABA bum-of-the-month world-title-prep reign, Vol. 5 - super fly edition! He is currently sitting on ten defenses so you know he is chomping at the bit for a world title shot. :!:

The rest of the month picks up nicely. The 7th is jam-packed. (Mitchell vs. Arreola & Marquez vs. Esquivias on Showtime...Chavez Jr. vs. Vera on HBO...Burns vs. Beltran in the UK in the afternoon...IB vs. some other 180lb dude that morning...:yep)
