**** Kirks Championships 2014 ****

Honestly, the one pick that I'm truly vacillating on is Soro-Douglas. Heard good things about Antwone but I thought Soro beat Baysungurov and really liked the way the Frenchman boxed in that fight. Tempted to change my pick...:think

 

Being the bigger man is more of a hindrance when you botch a weight cut and have to boil down to a lower weight class than the one you were already perfectly built for.

Like I said, he looked badly drawn at the weigh in.

Also, Prescott at 140 hydrated to 157 against Alvarado. If I'm remembering correctly Alvarado was also 157... Alvarado is an ex wrestler accustomed to cutting huge amounts of weight.

Prescott is not a small guy either, and looked much taller than Garcia at the weigh in.

 

Also, I'll prompt this question... What would Garcia's record look like if he had fought the following fighters?

Richard Abril
Mike Alvarado
Amir Khan
Miguel Vazquez
Kevin Mitchell
Terrence Crawford

Hell, throw Paul McCloskey in there. I have no doubt his awkwardness and ability to spoil wouldn't badly frustrate Garcia.

The 35-3 record looks nice, but there's little meat on the bones of it.

 

Changing my pick from Perez to Jennings by UD.

 

I actually think he is a bit underrated (though not by too much, as he is simply too limited to have ever broken the contender bubble without being gifted a sitting duck type match-up like K9 Bundrage to become a paper titlist indebted more to promoter's savvy than his own ability) with some decent stuff on his record.

Carson Jones, Smith (Antwone, not Larry), Gonzalez, and Cayo (despite being a little worn from rough use by then) are solid enough names to flag one a halfway decent contender - and he beat all but Gonzalez very clearly...and he was on his way to probably knocking out El Riel Hernandez in what minus the unfortunate head clash would've been his biggest ever W.

Having said that, a lot of things really don't reflect on him in very complimentary terms: getting just about shutout by Margarito role-playing as some kind of Will-o-the-Wisp style cutie-pie, failing to halt Shibata Flores (who Sergio freaking Mora got rid of in a round less than what Garcia had as his disposal), and splitting a pair with Calvin Odom - not very good looks.


I don't think anybody is hyping Garcia up or bedazzled or misled by his record. He is an FNF-level guy who is making probably his best run now in his mid-thirties, on, appropriately enough, a string of FNF shows.

Some of the guys you mentioned are just too little, Russ. Mitchell and McCloskey? Both could outbox Garcia if you shrunk him, but in reality they'd be smashed. Probably Khan too, obviously Garcia not in his league p4p but Khan has never faced anyone that big or strong and it would only take getting touched once for him to start dancing (although with his massive quickness advantage that might take several rounds). The guy has the frame of (and IMO could have probably always competed fairly comfortably as) a middleweight.

 

Meh, Antwone Smith is lethargic and gives away fights due to sheer inactivity and lack of grit.

Carson Jones was very green and was at a stage in his career where he was being knocked out by Alfonso Gomez 2 fights prior to rumbling with Garcia.

I don't know. I suppose I think Prescott gets underrated and Garcia a bit the opposite... But that's just my personal opinion.
