It's a bit of a worrying trend in boxing. It only really occurred to be today, but looking ahead at some of the fights coming up, a lot of them are on PPV. I think it really only hit me today because PPV isn't really the dirty word it once was. Obviously, back in the day and even as recently as 8, 9, 10 years ago PPV meant "**** I have to pay 49.99 for this fight" or watch it from a bar, check ESPN updates, etc. but now PPV isn't nearly as bad because there are other ways and other alternatives to watching PPV fights. Nevertheless, having Canelo-Angulo on PPV, possibly Golovkin-Chavez, going back to 4th quarter of last year when Bradley-Marquez was PPV. Having these big-ish fights on regular HBO or Showtime is what has given boxing this nice little uptick since around 2007-2009. Not everything was on PPV. It even goes back to what Jim Lampley said on the Marquez-Diaz I telecast in 2009, he mentioned that in years past this would have been on PPV. But, their new strategy moving forward was having fights like this on regular HBO. And again, having that sort of mentality is what has given boxing a bit of a boost. I'm hoping the market will correct itself. Hopefully, nobody buys tonight's fight and the other PPV's down the line. These type of fights really aren't deserving. Obviously, alternative methods are great. They've been fantastic, but it's not quite the same. You don't get the full enhancement of whatever your TV is capable of and they can be very spotty. So, while I do find myself somewhat excited over this Canelo-Angulo fight tonight, I'm not as excited as I should be.
