Edit: Updated. I left off one HUGE Director, Clive Barker. How the hell I forget him.:duh Well, I just added him.

I have an annoyance that I want to complain about, there's nothing that frustrates me more than people who could have been an ATG at their particular craft, squander their potential, and don't either out of fear of failure, or lack of confidence, push themselves even further to see just how great they could be. That applies in every area, and one of my areas of expertise is in Horror Films, a genre in which I'm a geek extraordinaire.:D

This has been a bugaboo for years with me, I tend to be a fetishistic fanboy of Directors, I obsess on and rank all their films, debate with friends who's got the best resumes and blah, blah, blah. Same crap that goes on here. But nothing grinds my gears more than when someone who is clearly an incredibly talented Director, shows up, makes one brilliant film, or maybe 2 or 3, and then virtually disappears, either because they lose interest, have a fear of failure, poor critical reception, whatever the reason may be, they just move on. Because in the world of Horror, guys tend to have trademark styles moreso than in any other genre, their films have atmosphere, feel, look, vibe and even scores, that gives their films a life of their own, they become part of the directors oeuvre, Romero films, or Craven films or Carpenter films, and many directors aspire to be like them and copy their styles. Its their brand so to speak. Well sadly there's a handful of guys who seemingly had all of the above going for them, and it was wasted, and that really pisses me off. Here's the main examples that's annoyed me.

Clive Barker - The man is a straight up genius. Perhaps one of the shining lights of Horror to appear on the scene in the late 80's. He directed Hellraiser, Nightbreed and Lord Of Illusions, but all the incessant studio meddling and censorship he had to deal with in Hollywood sucked all the joy out of film making for him, so he's stuck to writing books. Sadly most of his books are almost unfilmmable.

Robin Hardy - He made perhaps one of the greatest Horror films ever made, in The Wicker Man, he was primarily a writer, and I believe worked in British television, IIRC he produced a few documentaries, he finally after 30 years followed up with The Wicker Tree, which wasn't great, and that's about it. The man could have been an all time great British filmmaker, but for some reason he didn't care enough to go all out.

Harry Kumel - Absolutely brilliant filmmaker, he made two of my favorite Horror films of the 70's, Daughters Of Darkness one of the finest vampire films ever crafted, and the truly bizarre curio Malpertuis, he's a Belgian, and could have been right up there alongside the likes Fellini and Bergman had he really pushed himself, but nope, he lost interest and stopped making films.

Charles B. Pierce - Amazing Indie director from the 70's, he made a personal favorite of mine The Legend Of Boggy Creek (which you should all see), and the equally great The Town That Dreaded Sundown and The Evictors, and after that, he mainly worked in TV. 3 great films, and then nothing.

Fred Dekker - The Monster Squad and Night Of The Creeps, 2 masterpieces, and then zip, how the hell can a guy make something as brilliant as The friggin Monster Squad, and then give up directing and stick to writing. This one truly pains me.:crybaby2:

Ken Wiederhorn - Great NY director who I have a huge soft spot for, because he made a few of his films in Florida Shock Waves the iconic Nazi Zombie film, and the underrated slasher film with Jennifer Jason Leigh Eyes Of A Stranger, and the exemplary Return Of The Living Dead Part II. Turned to making TV shows.

Gary Sherman - Raw Meat, the amazing British subway cannibal film, the brutally underrated zombie film Dead & Buried, the sleazy as hell Vice Squad and Potergeist 3, then moved into TV as well.

Herk Harvey - One of the greatest one hit wonders ever, he was a after school special director and did local commercials, then he decided to make an Indie Horror flick, and it damn near rivaled Night Of The Living Dead in greatness, that film was Carnival Of Souls. And he disappeared. So infuriating.

Dick Maas - Great Dutch exploitation Director, made the amazing Amsterdamned and The Lift, then remade The Lift years later as The Shaft, but since there's virtually no market for horror in The Netherlands, no one would fund his films, and he stopped caring.

Kevin S. Tenney - Night Of The Demons, pure genius, Witchboard, damn good Tawny Kitaen movie. The criminally underrated sci-fi flick Peacemaker with Robert Forster. Then he turned to TV as well.

George McCowan - Did a bunch of 60's and 70's TV shows, then made the iconic Eco-Horror film Frogs back in 72, perhaps the greatest land based killer animal Horror ever made, and he called it quits and went back to doing TV.

Jim Wynorski - B-movie shlockmeister, yet undeniably gifted, he made the cult classics The Return Of Swamp Thing which I adore, the brilliant killer robot film Chopping Mall, and the remake of Roger Corman's classic with Traci Lords no less, Not Of This Earth, alongside Big Bad Mama 2, Deathstalker 2 and Transylvania Twist, then he called it quits and started making softcore porn for Cinemax like the Bare Wench and Busty Cops movies. What a wasted talent.

David Schmoeller - Made the awesome southern House Of Wax knock off Tourist Trap, the Full Moon classic Puppet Master, the virtually unseen The Seduction and Klaus Kinski in Crawlspace. All of them solid, then lost interest, and faded into obscurity.

See, frustrating isn't it? Okay, rant over.

I love movie talk as much as boxing, but I have nothing to add since I don't like horror and I've only seen four of those. You are right in general though. I hate to see a talent wasted. Not horror, but Troy Duffy writer/director of Boondock Saints ran afoul of Harvey Weinstein before his film was released in 1999, and Harvey vowed to ruin his career. The contract said he had to release the film so he did to I think two theaters for a weekend. It became a hit on video, but Duffy didn't work for a decade and then only to make a crumby sequel. Pretty sure Weinstein told everyone if they worked with Duffy they couldn't work with him.

Damn, I almost forgot to make the switch, I picked both of the underdogs in the Asian fights, so they'd think I was crazy, with plans on sticking with Doheny and Mukai being the ringer to throw people off my trail with the Doheny pick.:sisi1 I'd be super pissed if that backfired on me because I forgot to switch. So with that....

    I'm switching to Yaegashi TKO9

I knew it was a fluke lol..
But honestly Doheney was a good pick, I was contemplating of picking him as Iwasa lost by Ko to 2 southpaws but in the end, I chose the safe route cause Doheney was unknown.
I was surprised nobody challenge me on that.
I don't think it's crazy to pick Mukai, who is younger, longer and bigger. You might regret this switch.
And for Rosales-Barnes. It could be a problem if Rosales couldn't get him out of there.
    Ireland is not Japan.

Yeah, I was deadset on picking Doheny, I've seen him a few times and I thought he had the grit to take the belt off the champ, I thought possibly by stoppage, and even if he couldn't pull that off, a win outright. Mukai like you said, has a chance, I'm not certain about this switch at all. I still might switch back, but I doubt it. Mukai has zero signature wins, the best he does is hold his own for a few rounds against the elite before being KO'd.

As far as Rosales-Barnes goes, I have zero faith in Barnes, he's a talent, but he's not as slick as Andrew Selby and has next to zero power, I'd have picked Higa to KO him without hesitation, Rosales is solid enough to get the job done.

You know what... **** it. Mukai is younger, bigger, faster, Akira is moving up in weight and coming off of a bad KO loss, and basically momentary retirement, this is a bad move on his part. Mukai was right there with Tso and was able to stand up to a lot of damage from Sor Rungviasi, he can stand up to old man Yaegashi's best shots and walk right through them.

I'm switching back to Mukai KO6
