How can you hate Do the Right Thing? I'm not a big Spike Lee fan because he's super racist against white people and most of his stuff is polemics about race, but early Spike was great. Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X, 25th Hour, Get on the Bus are good movies. There's all kinds of cool memorable scenes. How'd you like Samuel Jackson as Radio Raheem or the story of right hand left hand? It was taken verbatim from that classic scene in Night of the Hunter. That was the first time I heard Public Enemy's Fight the Power, on that soundtrack, and I think Rosie Perez showed off some of her slick dance moves. I found out years later that she was a dancer on Soul Train.

As for Bill and Ted, I can think of greater films, but I am hard pressed to think of one that's brought me as much joy over the years.

Do you remember the part in Dangerous Liasons where John Malcovich writes love letters in bed on the backs of his lovers to the chaste woman he's trying to seduce?

Why do you feel that the Princess Bride is overrated? I think it's great, if a tad overrated but I've only ever come across Princess Bride fanatics and never someone who disliked it.

The thing about The Last Emperor isn't it's story. It's the cinematography. Vittorio Storaro may be the greatest cinematographer ever. It's a beautiful picture to look at. Maybe, it's not as visually striking as Last Tango in Paris, Apocalypse Now, or The Conformist but it's more subtle and sophisticated maybe. I'd have to put him in the company of Sven Nykvist, Roger Deakins, and Robert Richardson.

If you own those two you should watch them, even if they are French. Gerard Depardieu is a pretty great actor, even if he is a bit of a ****. Ditto for Sean Connery in Name of the Rose. He's excellent.

I've forgotten most of the plot of Brazil too but there are still some wonderful images that linger in my mind years later. I prefer Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as far as Gilliam is concerned, but Brazil was smart and well made. It wasn't your typical parody. It had a darkness, a heart, and was unusual.

How can you not love Amadeus? The writing is some of the best the screen has ever seen and the dude who played Saliari had one of the best performances ever.

Romancing the Stone is basically just a really good Indiana Jones knockoff, not as good as 1 and 3 but better than 2 and 4.

    1. The Big Chill, dude, I'm misting up just watching the trailer.
    2. National Lampoon's Vacation, lots of fun
    3. All The Right Moves, didn't see it
    4. The Hunger, that high?
    5. Return Of The Jedi, I like it in spite of the Ewoks.
    6. Risky Business, below All the Right Moves?
    7. Scarface, classic
    8. Class, didn't see
    9. Flashdance, good dance scenes, but not accurate to my actual experience in strip clubs
    10. Trading Places, back when Eddie Murphy was still funny
    11. Psycho II, I saw part of this, but the only Psycho I actually like is part 4.
    12. Valley Girl, Saw this on Kevin Smith's strong recommendation. Regretted it.
    13. A Blade In The Dark, didn't see
    14. 2019: After The Fall Of New York, Intriguing. Sounds like Children of Men meets Escape from New York. I need to see this.
    15. The King Of Comedy, I just didn't find any of this funny.
    16. The Osterman Weekend, Why haven't I seen more Peckinpah? His stuff's tremendous.
    17. Jaws 3-D, so bad it's good?
    18. The Dead Zone, "Your children are burning. Go now!" "The Ice IS Gonna BREAK!" I could never watch The Westwing without thinking of Martin Sheen in this.
    19. Lone Wolf McQuade, is this the one where Chuck Norris's car is buried and he just drives it out of the ground?
    20. The Right Stuff- Oh come on, this is a much better film than almost everything you listed above.
I tried limiting myself to 10 because it gets increasingly hard to pick even ten films from each year. I think by the time I tried this exercise down to the 40s I'd only seen between 5 and 8 films from any given year. Picking 20 isn't sustainable.

    1982
    1. Conan The Barbarian - what is best in film?
    2. Fitzcarrado - I hate Herzog movies.
    3. Blade Runner - love it
    4. 48hrs- love it
    5. The Thing - love it
    6. Poltergeist - like it, I'm still disturbed by this movie and the sequels. I get freaked out by mirrors.
    7. Fanny & Alexander - I sometimes wonder if this isn't Bergman's greatest film.
    8. Creepshow - didn't see
    9. Halloween 3 - didn't see
    10. Tenebre - Argento is pretty good
    11. An Officer And A Gentleman - I got nowhere else to go! Love that scene, not sure if the rest holds up.
    12. First Blood - beautiful
    13. The Living Dead Girl - didn't see
    14. The New York Ripper - didn't see
    15. Friday The 13th Part 3 - this the one with the motorcycle decapitation?
    16. Cat People- didn't see
    17. ET - holds up strong
    18. The World According To Garp- didn't see
    19. Evil Dead - overrated
    20. Tootsie- you liked Mrs. Doubtfire too didn't you?

    1981
    1. On Golden Pond- could never get through this
    2. Halloween 2 - didn't see
    3. The Road Warrior - classic
    4. Nighthawks - isn't the final scene like Rutger Hauer in a dress?
    5. Raiders Of The Lost Ark - classic
    6. Stripes - doesn't hold up
    7. The Beyond - didn't see
    8. The Howling - overrated
    9. Friday The 13th Part 2 - didn't see
    10. An American Werewolf In London - the dream sequences are great
    11. Southern Comfort - trained killers really shouldn't have trouble dealing with a couple of yokels
    12. Sadomania- didn't see
    13. Reds - I liked this.
    14. Blow Out - John Travolta stars in Blow Out. Hmm. Skip.
    15. The Burning - Hey Harvey Weinstein wrote it. How bout that?
    16. Escape From New York - way too low
    17. Caveman - what's with all the caveman movies back then?
    18. The Prowler - didn't see
    19. Hell Night - didn't see
    20. Anthropophagus 2 - didn't see
I've seen a lot of films from this era. I know it well. I'm surprised how many of your picks I haven't seen. It's like when you run into someone who listens to a different genre of music.

    1980
    1. The Shining- classic Kubrick, can you believe King hates it and wanted that other one made?
    2. The Empire Strikes Back - the best Star Wars
    3. Friday The 13th - classic, one of the best horror films ever
    4. The Fog - decent Carpenter horror flick, not his best work
    5. Little Darlings - hmmmmmmmm
    6. Raging Bull - one of the greatest films ever at 6?
    7. Cruising - pass, I don't need to see Serpico get pounded in the ass.
    8. Atlantic City - I thought Louis Malle, the director, was older. He makes good stuff.
    9. Inferno - more argento
    10. The Blue Lagoon- saw but remember little
    11. Macabre - you've seen a lot of these Italian horror films
    12. Anthropophagus - didn't see
    13. American Gigolo - didn't see
    14. The Elephant Man- I guess I do like a David Lynch film.
    15. Superman 2 - Still the best Superman movie?
    16. Stir Crazy - Hilarious. A great comic duo. I had no idea it was directed by Sidney Poitier.
    17. He Knows You're Alone- didn't see
    18. Caddyshack - overrated
    19. Motel Hell - didn't see
    20. City Of The Living Dead -didn't see

I'll respond in full later, but yeah, I know for a fact I won't be able to sustain the Top 20's beyond the mid 60's, maybe to the late 50's at best. although I'll touch on a few things, there's no gay sex for Al in Cruising, its a horror film more than anything, probably Friedkin's most chilling work outside of Exorcist, its right up there next to Sorcerer and French Connection IMO, I'll throw in Killer Joe and Bug, since I rate them quite highly. Yeah, I adore Italian cinema, even the filth. I may prefer it.:D Peckinpah is easily a Top 10 Director of mine, I'll repost that list. No I wasn't a fan of Doubtfire, I think I gave it an HM. I love Argento dearly, and Fanny & Alexander is right up there with his best, I'll ruminate on that a little more.

Hard luck to pincai, seems like Kano was on top and going well and perhaps got unlucky with a headbutt that spurned on Ono. I'm sure there will be an opportunity for revenge soon :tiburon:
