I thought that Stalker and Solaris were awesome, but Andrei Rublev blew both of them away. I was especially impressed by the Tatar Raid in the fifth part of the film. Stuff like that, people getting speared to the ground, tortured with fire, horses falling down stairs really sticks with you.

Closely Watched Trains is sort of like Life is Beautiful. It's a light-hearted comedic take on Nazi occupation. The train station agent comes from a long line of lazy men who just want easy jobs and to do as little as possible to get by. Meanwhile, there's sex going on all around him, and he's trying to lose his virginity. In the background at the end, there's some important stuff about the Resistance. The novella is a war-comedy kind of like Catch-22, although I doubt the author had read that when he wrote CWT only four years later. It's antecedent is almost certainly The Good Soldier Svejk which is a Czech classic.

Sword of Doom is my favorite samurai film. It follows the actions of an evil rogue samurai, not an anti-hero, he's a villain. He rapes and murders. He's an assassin. He kills the young and old, women and children. He's sort of a bodhisatva but the path he takes to nirvana is one of dedicating himself to pure evil. Evil is like his creed. And he's a really good swordsman, total badass. There are a couple of films based on the long episodic novel that features this guy, kind of like Lone Wolf and Cub or The Eight Dog Chronicles. And this film has a subplot where the son of a guy he's murdered is dedicating his life like Batman to getting good enough to beat him and tracking him down for revenge. I won't spoil what happens at the end. It is amazing.

The Battle of Algiers is quite frankly one of the best war movies I've ever seen. It's about the French war on terror in their Muslim colony of Algiers in the late 50s. They have suicide bombers, mass shootings, assassinations, terrorist cells, torture, all that stuff we got from ours in the 2000s.

Yeah, in high school and college I used to watch a couple a day. Somehow I found time to read a book a week too. Sadly, in my thirties I've really fallen off in both respects. I've only seen 34 movies this year and read about 15 books. I think I'm reading too many comicbooks and spending too much time online. You lose your focus as you get older and get pulled in so many different directions. Watching boxing, looking at art, listening to podcasts, and sometimes playing video games takes it's toll.

It depends how much you are into something. I probably don't watch many more than a hundred fights a year, but a lot of the guys here find time to watch about three hundred. It's all about prioritization. Prioritization and obsession. When you really like something boxing/movies the tendency is to push it as far as you can. You become a completionist. You want to see all 80 fights of your favorite fighter or all 70 films of your favorite director/writer/actor. I feed both habits the same. I make lists and work my way through them. I watched the fight of the years the same way I watched the Best picture winners or imdbs top 250.

Then once I'd finished the fight of the years, I started making a list of alternates. I watched Arguello vs Escalera 2 yesterday. There are some fans who just want to watch everthing new and in theaters, and then there are the historicists who like watching old 1930s fights and films. That's what the Classic section of this site is for. It's no different from any other hobby. It's pretty common to find people obsessed with football, baseball, basketball, or soccer. They watch pro and college divisions and manage to fill up their whole week. Then there are the news junkies who have to watch hours of news everyday, and read endless articles, because they are so afraid they'll miss something.

I talked to my sister the other day. She has a husband and a new baby so she doesn't have time for any of this nonsense.
