Here's an article I wrote that's not Boxing related and I figured some of you for some reason may want to read it.


Cognitive Dissonance is a B****-Fear Controls Everything We Do.

Okay I'm going to try to rein myself in a little and not sound too pretentious in this thread. Obviously the phrase "Coming Out Of The Closet", refers to Gays finally admitting the secret they've concealed from the rest of the world, that they're Gay of course. However its a great Metaphor for the rest of us as well, because most people try their best to conceal their innermost secrets from the rest of the world, because no one wants anyone to see their true nature, so we bury our darkness deep in a box at the bottom of our proverbial closets. We hide all of our doubts and our differing ideas because of fear, the fear that we will not be accepted by family, friends, co-workers, the community in general if our dirty laundry was hung out for the whole world to see. Which is a perfectly logical decision if one doesn't want to have their life upended and ruined. I think this phrase perfectly sums up all of us no matter who we are Straight/Gay, Left/Right, Faithful//Faithless or Moral/Immoral. Because we are all hiding things, frequently even from ourselves. We are all closeted with our innermost fears and always in denial about something.

Here's a few examples

Faith and Religion
Of course you have the two very prominent camps, The Religious, and Non-Religious. Extreme and even moderate Religious people go through their life in fear, they want nothing to corrupt their world view, They prefer to live with their fingers in their ears and not listen, Why? Because when they listen, doubt creeps into their minds eventually, because almost every facet of their faith can be deconstructed and torn asunder with ease. However when they question their belief system their whole world begins to crumble because its the foundation many build their lives upon, everything that you thought was real, you now lose faith in, it can be a truly devastating feeling that can overwhelm some to the point of a mental breakdown. Most don't want to experience this soul crushing doubt, so what do they do, they just ignore it, the doubt they feel is conveniently hidden away in their internal closet. Because what does it mean if they have no faith to rely on, that when they die, they rot and are forgotten, that's a brutal thought for the religious to have to process, everything you've always believed in... are lies, its far too much, especially when you spend decades believing in the concept of a Heaven and an Afterlife, it can be emotionally devastating. And if you factor in the fear they have inside that they will be criticized or abandoned by their family and friends if they are not adequately devout, which is all it takes sometimes....the religious can be very unforgiving, that's enough to paralyze most people with fear and keep them from thinking logically and questioning their beliefs....so they don't, is easier to live life with rose colored glasses on. Its easier for them to just ignore the doubt and believe.
Deep down they question if their faith is real but don't want to admit it to themselves.


Then on to the Atheists/Agnostics... quite often we are similar to the religious in our denial in the existence of everything. We love to rely heavily on science, because its fact based, if scientists haven't or can't prove something to us... its not real... it doesn't exist. Which is an incredibly illogical way the view the world as well. Most of the theories scientists have come up with over the centuries, no one had given much thought to beforehand, or they didn't have any proof of... until its was proven, scientists are discovering new animals and developing new theories everyday. Science itself is a constant evolutionary process, its constant experimintation, constant research and when new evidence arises you should take the new information into account and see if it meshes with existing theories and facts, so you can form some sort of a synthesis with the old and new information. We are supposed to process new information not ignore it. Yet we do, no matter how many people see ghosts, aliens, Bigfoot, experience miracles etc. we laugh at them and call them nutjobs... which they very well most likely are. But what are we so afraid of that we can't listen to them, or even give consideration that there is something out there that has not been discovered as of yet....... its because of fear, we are afraid if we start believing in something we'll have to change the way we live our life, which no one wants to do. So into the closet goes any doubts we have that there could be something that, we being the geniuses we are, aren't aware of. Atheists are really good at making people feel incredibly stupid and have no qualms with mocking even their best friends for thinking something even vaguely spiritual. So Agnostic doubters they keep it to themselves.
If our belief in non belief is so strong then why is it that someone talking about God is such a threat to us, are we that weak that we'll crumble at the mere mention of a higher power... do we fear we may be wrong at times.


Our Political Ideologies
No one wants to be looked at as a traitor, especially when you're on the Right.... Faith, Family, Guns, the Constitution, love of Country, belief in the Capitalist system, is the bane of their existence, their whole life revolves around these things. So when George Bush completely wrecked this country... what happened, a whole lot of Right Wingers short circuited because they lost faith in their dear Republican Party.....And instead of coming to terms with the Corporatist Neo-Conservative Fascist ideology that the Right has adopted over the last 40 years, that absolutely crushed everything that is great about this country and our standing in the world, and admitting they ****ed up by voting for Bush. What do they do... deny, deny, deny any form of responsibility. Somehow now Bush and his father were Big Government Socialists who don't have much in common with RW ideology, they're really Wilsonian Leftists in disguise... no they're not.. they're just Republicans, and you all have to own them and take responsibility for electing them and believing their bull**** hook, line and sinker.
But they don't, they just hide in the closet and act like its not their fault, because they are too ashamed to admit to themselves they were wrong. A lot of that has to do with the rigidity on the Right and their harsh reprisals to anyone they feel has betrayed their side, it strikes fear into the hearts of any potential dissenters keeping them from speaking their mind.

On multiple political issues most people have frequent doubt, but they never allow themselves to act on that doubt and adjust their politics because of fear...... fear their family and friends will reject them, so in the closet their doubt goes.


The same goes for the Left, we are in complete denial about how totalitarian we have become, our recent seeming disdain for Freedom of Speech, and constant Big Brother like tendencies that almost encourage people to rat out anyone who doesn't go along with our Left-Wing political agenda. We are becoming full fledged Stalinists in many ways, and don't want acknowledge it, because we are so caught up in our madness we cannot process things clearly anymore. We refuse to listen to any counter argument that isn't lockstep with our ideology and anyone who slightly differs get shouted down and put in their place, by being called a racist, or fascist, or ****phobe, or bigot, etc. just because they disagree on the tiniest little thing. We are so afraid to admit that the Right may be correct about one or two things we block all other points of view out and just refuse to listen. When we start having doubts we just bury our head in the sand and hunker down and entrench ourselves even more. Because if we're not 100% Left on everything we are impure and that's not tolerable, which is incredibly ridiculous. especially for a bunch of supposed "Liberals".

Gun Rights, does the Right never have doubt when malls and schools are shot up. Does the Left never have doubts when there are no guns to defend the malls and schools when they are shot up.

Drugs, does the Right ever consider what a complete waste of Federal money the Drug War is, and at the same time does the Left ever take into consideration that Marijuana is a gateway drug for people with addictive personalities, and we may be at the beginning of a very slippery slope, not to mention a whole nation of potheads will be very unproductive.

Of course we do, but....we ignore all of our pesky unbiased semi-reasonable thoughts, because they're contradictory and instead of trying to make sense of the contradictions and how complicated the issue is, we just go back to our respective corners and prepare for the next round.

 

Part2

Morality/Immorality.
This one, I'm not sure if its a good or bad thing that people closet their inner most demons, maybe more decorum would be apropos in some cases, but the majority of people in this country are perverse in one way or another, and of course no one wants to admit to their kinks. Both Women and Men always have their secret fantasies that would be entirely inappropriate to be mentioned in polite society. But everybody is most likely guilty of some form of weirdness, the mailman may like fat chicks, the trashman may like feet, the secretary may like bondage, the priest probably likes children, your neighbor probably likes gilf porn, your Aunt may like interracial, your sister may like swallowing and your father might be a flasher, you just never can tell sometimes. And they are all clinging to their secret like their life depends on it. And in reality, it kind of does, because if your perversion gets out, most people in your life will never look at you the same way again, there will always be that undercurrent of... what do they really think about you, are they talking about you behind your back. Which causes a degree of paranoia, so most choose to not reveal it. Unfortunately some people like Anthony Wiener can't keep that **** under wraps and their life is ruined because of their kinkiness. And of course there are the prudes among us that are appalled by pornographic material and even the idea of oral *** freaks them out.... but of course they are repressing their innermost thoughts as hard as they possibly can, and for that reason we have the high level of *** offenders that we do, because the conflicts in their mind is too much for them to bear and they crack...and eventually act out, and because of their mental dissonance they have ruined the lives of countless innocent people in our society. All of the this is a product of repressive puritanism that turns these people into the monsters that they are and eventually become a burden almost to heavy to bear in our communities.

***uality be it straight, gay, lesbian, bi, q****, poly, trans, fetishistic, sado-masochistic etc. is very complex and isn't easily defined yet most people try their damnedest to put it in a box and frame it, and try to make it conform to what they want it to be, even when their own mind may be fighting them tooth and nail. But we put everything in closet it makes us feel better. Because no one and I mean no one wants to admit to how weird they are. We should all try to free our minds but everyone seems to prefer to keep that part of our brains locked in a maximum security cell. A closet with bars on it.


Race Issues.
We're all Bigots Whites, Blacks, Latinos, Asians the whole world, we think in Stereotypes, and are Chauvinists, Racists, Supremacists to varying degrees. Even the biggest Liberal on TV flapping their jaws about acceptance, probably won't drive through a Black Neighborhood at night. Because its instilled in us in the womb, we will never be able to shake ,its tribal, its primal, no matter how hard we try. It doesn't mean we shouldn't try, it just means you probably won't get anywhere with your attempts. Everyone is also in Denial about everything that their race does wrong. The Black community is in desperate trouble, the poverty, the crime, the child neglect, the misogyny, the ****phobia, the irresponsibility. Yet they want to lay everything on the shoulders of others be it the Police, Whites, Koreans etc. Meanwhile the Whites, our communities are falling apart as well because of meth, heroin, alcoholism, bigotry, greed, gluttony and poverty and who do we blame.... Blacks, Mexicans, Jews, Arabs, Gays anything we can come up with to shirk responsibility as well, we come up with countless boogiemen, it helps us get through the day a little better. We never talk about our real feelings and real animosities we always blame someone else and deny, because taking responsibility for your own actions is far too hard and painful and nobody wants to do that... do they? This country will never have a real discussion about race because we don't want to admit our true feelings to ourselves, because then we might have to try to fix them, and we're far too lazy for that. So into the closet they go.


We are all suffering from living in a constant form of denial due to our closeted doubts we have about our own ideologies, preferences, beliefs and generalized anxieties about the world around us and how the people in it perceive us.
And everytime we try to confront our inconsistencies we suffer bouts of Cognitive Dissonance, when our mind is in a state of mental stress that overcomes us when we have two contradictory ideas floating around in our heads at the same time, and we short circuit when we try to reconcile them. But because most people are mental midgets and can't even deal with people disagreeing with them, we're never going to be able to adequately argue with ourselves and try to set ourselves straight. Because we may actually have to confront something about ourselves that makes us uncomfortable which sucks and isn't much fun and nobody likes being inconvenienced that much do they.


But we fear change and everything that is different, we never want to venture outside of our ideological comfort zones, we're never willing to try to improve anything about ourselves, we're content to toe the line, and go with the flow, because it takes far less effort. So we'll continue to live in our states of denial and act like everything is perfectly fine when in reality most people doubt everything they believe on a fairly consistent basis. I'm perfectly fine however because I have confronted my hypocrisies and inconsistencies and have learned to live with the fact that I am a hypocrite about many, many things and I've come to terms with it. But life is very complex and can't easily be fit into a Black and White binary, most things are varying Shades of Grey and we all need to figure that out. Because when everyone realizes how complex most issues are then maybe we can all let our brains cool off and think straight for a change. Everything is far more complicated than you really want it to be, Deal with it.
