Not sure why this one is so tough for me, but Ill go Ruslan by UD... I am going to be pissed if I start the year off with a loss He is a solid, solid fighter, but I just havnt seen enough of Herrera to feel confident that I am making the right decision, however, from what I have seen, Ruslan seems to be the more polished and solid of the two, seems a bit of a brute as well.

Here we go boxing fans we roll into a new year of 2011...we haven't gotten off to a good start with two pullouts already, but hopefully the first Friday Night Fights of the year kicks us off with a bang inside the ring and looking at the main event I think there will be a big bang.

So, starting off with the undercard fight the young U.S. Olympian Demetrius Andrade will be taking on Alberto Herrera (on short notice) he was scheduled to fight Sammy Gonzalez, who would have been a better fight and more of a step up than Herrera. Nonetheless, we get Herrera who is a tiny bit of a step up for Andrade. So, let's talk about that for a second, who has Andrade fought in his young 11 fight career? Well, one name standsout and that is Chris Chatman. Down the line we may hear of Chris Chatman as a hot prospect and we see him on ShoBox. Chatman is a real good fight and he gave Andrade a good fight and many think the fight should have been a draw (the scores were flat out wrong. If you check Boxrec the judges had it a shutout, and that is far from the truth) and the other name that sort of stands out is Tony Hirsch, but even then that is a pretty far stretch. He does seem solid, he gave Estrada a nice fight in recent fight, but anyway getting back to the one solid scalp Andrade has right now (and when I say solid scalp I'm talking about in Andrade as of right now as a prospect) Chatman has won every fight and in his 2nd most recent fight he KO'd Alberto Herrera which has been Herrera's only loss and he is fighting Andrade and then when we look at Herrera's resume in his 2nd most recent fight he fought Sammy Gonzalez to a draw, a fight that he probably should have lost. So, there we go all of my blathering has come full circle and back to my point Gonzalez would be a better opponent than Herrera and he would have a decent training camp. Instead, we get a lesser opponent who is coming into the fight on short notice and with all that said.....Andrade wins...or at least should win by a early stoppage.

Now, the main event Ruslan Provodnikov and Mauricio Herrera and you know this should be a hell of a fight and I think this should be one of the better fights on FNF for this season. I've been thinking and I just don't see how it can't be entertaining. Both fighters come forward, though Herrera will probably have to fight off the back foot due to Provodkinov being a bit too big and too strong. And both fighters throw a lot of punches and both have big hearts. So, I just can't see this fight being anything but great. We got Ruslan Provodnikov who most should by now. He's been on FNF a few times now. He's fought good opposition in Victor Hugo Castro, Javier Jauergui, and the shopworn Drunken Master. Same can be said for Mauricio Herrera he's fought nothing but fighters with winning (except for his 2nd fight in his pro career) and he has won them all and except for the one blemish against Mike Anchondo, and for those of you that saw that fight on ShoBox you know that Herrera won and he should be undefeated. Anyway, what Herrera has done is amazing, he went pro late because of his former trainer holding him back and he has had to work his way up. He's the fighter that was able to break thru and win the fights that he had 3 days to get ready for. For Herrera to be in this postition now is amazing, and he should get more credit for what he has been able to do in his career. So, anyway, back to the fight like I say it should be a hell of a fight. Both fighters are tough as nails and both have been tested early on in their respective careers. With this being a 12 round fight I think Provodnikov will eventually wear down Herrera in the championship rounds and stop him due to the fact that Herrera doesn't have the fire power to keep him off him, and he's not a natural fighter fighting off the back foot. I'll be surprised if this isn't a good fight.

Before I end this kudos to ESPN2 for last year's great schedule of fights and for the early part of 2011 looking good on paper. The ratings for FNF have been going up and ESPN2 is delievering us better fights year by year. Hopefully, the ratings go up yet again and the budget keeps getting bigger and bigger year by year.

What a damn fight. Herrera is likely on his way to a UD loss if he makes it this last round but I have been impressed with his guts and heart. Both these guys have made this quite a good slugfest.
