I first was introduced to Walcott through a Ring Magazine edition, I believe they were talking about p4p fighters, and something about him just stood out. His short stature, his nickname of 'demon', his supposed tenacity, and the way in which he would take on anyone, anytime, no matter how big. Joe Walcott, (March 13, 1873 – October 1, 1935) also known as Barbados Joe Walcott to distinguish him from the American known by the same name, was born in Demerara, British Guyana on March 13, 1873, and died October 1, 1935. Nicknamed "The Barbados Demon" Walcott, stood 5'1½ tall, was a formidable fighter who fought from 1890 to 1911. 'Barbados' Joe Walcott was the idol of the later 'Jersey' Joe Walcott, who chose his to use his idol's real name as his own ring name in his honour. (Wiki) This content is protected The Barbados Demon was truly one of the forefathers of the pound for pound fighters. Standing barely over 5ft tall, he regularly took on all comers. It is said by some, rightly or wrongly, that Joe actually coined the phrase 'The bigger they are.... the harder they fall.' He is a fighter from the lost times of boxing, but wanted to shine a little light on who this fighter was. Walcott took on men of every size, class, and color. -------- The old timers of boxing, including the ones in his own time, thought highly of Joe. Nat Fleischer and Charley Rose ranked Walcott as the #1 All-Time Welterweight; Other sports personalities such as Tad Dorgan, Tom O’Rourke, Dan Morgan and Jimmy Johnston had called Joe “the greatest pound for pound fighter who ever lived” ; He was elected to the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame in 1955 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This content is protected Links Wikipedia [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbados_Joe_Walcott[/ame] Boxrec http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/Joe_Walcott Walcott Article http://coxscorner.tripod.com/walcott.html Walcott Article http://www.eastsideboxing.com/boxing-news/amato1804.php --------------------------------------------------- This content is protected -------------------------------- This content is protected This content is protected Felix Trinidad vs Fernando Vargas http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showpost.php?p=8984571&postcount=1666 Jamie Moore vs Matthew Macklin http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showpost.php?p=9138868&postcount=2312 Julio Cesar Chavez vs Meldrick Taylor This content is protected Rocky Marciano vs Jersey Joe Walcott http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showpost.php?p=9434430&postcount=3698 Ricardo Mayorga vs Vernon Forrest This content is protected This content is protected Rubin 'The Hurricane' Carter http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showpost.php?p=9198107&postcount=2459
Victor Cayo UD Barker UD Solis UD Raul Garcia UD Julio Cesar Miranda TKO Hirales UD Ruiz UD Adrian Hernandez TKO
Just a note. FNF's this week sucks now with Peterson/Cayo/Coleman all not fighting each other, but there is a GREAT fight on Solo Boxeo Tecate (channel Telefutura...one of those spanish channels that will be on one of the first 20 channels and what not, look for it) highly touted Peter Quillin is taking on the very tough top 10 contender in Jesse Brinkley. Great fight, that should not be missed.
Darren Barker vs Domenico Spada- Darren Barker by UD Luis Alberto Lazarte vs. Ulises Solis II- Ulises Solis by UD Raul Garcia vs. Rommel Asenjo- Raul Garcia by UD Jesus Geles vs. Ramon Garcia Hirales II- Ramon Garcia Hirales by UD Gilberto Keb Baas vs. Adrian Hernandez II- Gilberto Keb Baas by KO Three rematches on tap. Lotta rematches happening, will be interesting to see which ones have the same result and which fights don't. So, with that let start off with one of the three rematches.... Gilbert Keb Baas-Adrian Hernandez II. Great fight the first fight, and now since nobody else has even seen it or even looked it up, Hernandez' only loss came against you guessed it this man GKB. GKB KO'd him 5, in a fight which was very good and Hernandez was pretty much winning the fight up until getting starched in the 5th round. So, I'm sure Hernandez this go around he will try and not making it as much of a barnburner, or at least not get caught up in one. Still though I am going to take Keb Baas by KO because I'm banking that GKB will get to Hernandez and knock him out yet again. Bit of a reach, but eh why not. Geles-Hirales, the first fight was a great fight in which Hirales was dominating early on, but Geles with his body attacked mounted a comeback and squeaked by with a SD win in his hometown. This time this fight is in Mexico, Hirales home country, and I think he wins it this go around. I didn't score the fight officially, but I thought it was a 115-113 fight either way or a draw. Two of the judges had it like that and the other judge came in late and just saw the middle rounds and gave one or two mercy rounds to Hirales, apparently. So, this go around I see Hirales def winning this fight. I think this is a pretty easy call, Hirales is the better fighter, he def could have gotten the nod the last time, and this fight is in his home country. All of these signs point to Hirales winning by UD and that's my very confident pick. Two down one to go and we look at the other rematch fight....a fight in which really doesn't deserve a rematch. Everybody that saw the first fight knows Solis kicked the hell Lazarte, this fight I did score live, and I had Solis winning pretty much every round. Unfortunatly, for Solis, he didn't get the nod....it was a majority draw. This fight, for some reason, is in Argentina again. Solis is the better fight and should prove that again in this fight. Hopefully, the judges get it right this time. Interesting matchup this one. We have Raul Garcia who is 28 years old, but already has been in some very tough fights. He's already getting a bit long in the tooth and you can say he's been a bit fortunate to be in the spot he's in, with only one loss. He has fought good tough quality competition already/ He's got three against Sammy Gutierrez, Ronald Barrera twice, Luis De La Rosa, and his only loss to Nkosinathi Joyi. Rommel Asenjo on the other hand, doesn't have any resume, two losses both in which he was ohhh about 17-19 somewhere in there. He's got massive upside, a bit crude, and a wicked wicked left hand. If he had an even deadlier right hand wow, this kid could be dynamite. As of now he's got a nice right hand that has been able to get him along soft competition. Now, he's in a world title shot against a very good opponent. So, with all that said, as tempting as it would be to pick Rommel Asenjo because he def has a great shot at KO'ing Garcia, I'll take the experience, counter punching vet, to neutralize Asenjo's power. Last, but not least we got a great fight in Darren Barker and Domenico Spada. This is a big step up for Barker, and Barker is someone who hasn't just fought a bunch of nobodies. He's got some nice scalps in McDermott, McKay, Sharpe, Bendall, etc. He's got a nice list of good wins at this stage of his career. This fight though against Spada is very dangerous as Spada def has the skills and experience to upend the undefeated Barker. Spada has got nice D, pretty decent boxing ability, and his record says 3 losses, but in reality it should be either 0 or may'be even 1...but you know that's how it goes now doesn't it? Anyway, if this is in netural territory I would def love picking the upset here, but I can't because Spada has been jobbed a couple of times and this fight is in London I believe pretty close to Barker's hometown and the last time I took somebody (Ushona over Vessell) Ushona got jobbed and didn't win because he didn't have power and I vowed I wouldn't take another road fighter over there and I'm sticking with it...for now, I don't think Spada has enough pop to put away Barker. So, I'll just take the safe pick and go with Barker by close...or erm very very wide UD in the 120-101 range.
According to Boxrec Hernandez knocked out Keb Baas in 4 in their first meeting. Hernandez's only loss has come to Oscar Ibarra.
Well, **** me with a ham sandwich. atsch Wrong fookin fight. atsch atsch atsch Cpt. Kirk, change my pick to Hernandez by KO. atsch Edit- I was just testing people just to see if anybody actually read my long blabbering....yea, that's it It was just a test. Bajingo you passed. :good
