Not really that good of a week. A lot of filler fights. A couple of really interesting fights with the Vernon Paris-Tim Coleman and Cristobal Cruz-Art Hovhannesyan fights, but other than that, a really poor week.

Getting started usually, I breakdown and go in depth for each fight, but a lot of these fights are really so one-sided there isn't much point. Leo Zappavigna is coming off a one sided UD against one of the better 135 fighters right now in Miguel Vazquez. No shame losing that fight, now he is taking on the chinny, but powerful Ameth Diaz. Diaz does have legit power. I definitely think the first couple of rounds will be entertaining and very exciting, but Zappavigna has too much power, and Diaz just doesn‘t have a good chin. If Zappavigna lands one big shot on Diaz’ chin, he is going down. Diaz can’t take much punishment and with that I think Zapavigna takes out Diaz really early in the fight. Don't blink. Charlie Ota, the skillful Japanese-American is rematching Akio Shibata, a fighter who he beat up and stopped in 8 rounds. Really don't see the point in this fight happening again. I see the same result. Ota is just too good and stops Shibata again. Ryol Li Lee is a better boxer than Rikiya Fukuhara. Fukuhara doesn't beat the middle of the pack consistently, Lee is above what you would call average. He's a decent contender, very solid fighter. So, Lee by UD.

With Pavlik pulling out the previous paragraph got shorter. So, now we get into the nice juicy, but small portion of the weekend. Starting off with Art Hovhannesyan-Cristobal Cruz. Hovhannesyan really turned heads by destroying Archie Ray Marquez in 6 rounds on Showtime’s ShoBox just 2 months ago. Hovannesyan doesn’t have much of a resume after that, but if you just look at his skill set you can tell he is very talented. Has good head movement, can fight coming forward, and off the back foot. As well as good counterpunching skills and devastating power. He really is a great package. He is facing a good name in Cristobal Cruz, Cruz a very good fighter, but at 135, I think he is decent. He is a career 126 fighter and he struggles any where north of 126. After losing to Steven Lueveno he took a few more fights at 130 and a fight at 135 and he went 2-3 in those fights. He went back down to 126 and has fought down their for the past 7 fights and has success going 5-1-1 and the draw was a head butt early. So, he is a very good 126 fighter, but at 135 I don’t think he will have success again, against a big, strong, talented fighter in Hovannesyan. I see Hovannesyan making another statement on national TV and really getting his name out there and throwing his hat in the very loaded 135 pound division,

Tim Coleman-Vernon Paris is an interesting fight in more ways than one. Both are talented, young, prospects, but their trainers know each other pretty well. Tim Coleman is trained by Roger Mayweather and Vernon Paris is trained by Floyd Mayweather Sr. So that in itself is very interesting. Both are sort of mirror images of each other, at least defensively. Both when not throwing are in that shoulder roll type defense. Power they both are about the same, don’t be fooled by Coleman’s 5 KO’s in 19 victories. He has legit pop. The problem is that he just throws one right hand at a time and he’ll load up the right hand. Coleman doesn’t have a jab, he just pushes it out there. That’s basically what Tim Coleman is, a quick boxer, decent power, jab that he’ll show out there and put it out there, loads up with the right hand, quite often he leads with a left hook to the head. His biggest asset is his heart though. He is definitely a pit bull (his nickname) you can compare him to a less polished, a bit crude, Timothy Bradley. When he does get close and throw combos he leaves himself exposed, and when he gets hit, he wants to get you right back. He’s got a lot of fight in him, very much a tough customer. Vernon Paris meanwhile is the more skilled and polished fighter. He has a good jab, when he does use it, likes to lay around fight off the back foot and counter with a right uppercut, left hook when coming in. Has good speed, heart and stamina I question. He fought Joe Santiago on Showtime’s ShoBox and escaped with a SD. He did deserve the victory, it was close but clear, but he was tired and running on empty in the final couple of rounds of an 8 round fight. So, it’s a real toss up this one. Two young fighters looking to take the next step. ESPN 2’s Friday Night Fights have seen plenty of undefeated records go out the window, and Paris has an undefeated record, but I think I’m going to pick Vernon Paris anyway. By SD, a real close fight, I think Paris will have the cleaner, effective punching, and I think the judges will reward that, even though Coleman will be pressing the action. Really tough call, I think a draw though is very possible and very likely in this fight. If I had to make a pick though probably, I guess, Vernon Paris by SD, but funny enough I would feel more comfortable picking the draw in this fight.
