How will your picks hold up when they are open to challenge by anyone?
The Peoples Champion is our uncrowned gladiator, it is open for anyone, no matter how many fights you have, no matter what your record looks like, whether you come to the thread a few times a day or once a month, or you have never even posted in this thread before. Be the first to challenge the Champs picks and the title is up for grabs. :good

A massive, huge, mega, weekend. Tons and tons and tons of fights from Thursday to Monday. No need to get formal with a nice cute introduction let's get right to the boxing.

On Thursday, in Costa Rica, undefeated Bryan Vazquez will be taking on Nicaraguan Santos Benavides. Vazquez is a nice, young, undefeated fighter. He doesn't have much of a resume, probably, since he keeps fighting in Costa Rica, but he has skills. He has looked very skillful against the competition he has been fighting. He dosen't have much of a jab, a bit on the small side, but has nice defense. He has that James Toney, shoulder roll defense. It really is nice to watch, he executes it pretty nicely. When he gets inside he throws nice, powerful, combos. Benavides is a step up for him, but not a major step up. Benavides is quite crude, has gotten a bit lucky in some fights. Basically, he's not as good as his record indicates, but like most of those fighters, he has very good power. Benavides has a punchers chance, but very slim. I have Vazquez winning by late stoppage.

On Friday, in Russia, James Toney makes his first professional fight outside the States to take on bonecrushing puncher, Denis Lebedev. Toney is coming off a horrible, horrible win against Damon Reed. A fight in which he looked his worse, physically, and skillfully. He came into the fight with bubbling fat all over his trunks weighing in at a career high 253 and looking painfully slow, and old. Things have changed, though, he is serious again and judging by the weigh in has looked at the press conferences and through training videos, he is very serious. On the otherside, Denis Lebedev has had two careers so far. One career from 2001-2004 as a Light Heavyweight. And then he came back into the ring in 2008 as a Cruiserweight and has knocked everybody out, besides the Marco Huck "loss." In his last fight though, he didn't look so hot. An old, shot, Roy Jones Jr. was giving him problems for the first 5 rounds. May'be Lebedev was just letting Jones have his fun...or may'be Jones really was making Lebedev look bad, before Lebedev stepped on the gas. Either way, his performance peaked James Toney's interest and vuala we have an intriguing match over in Russia between the skilled old fighter (who we really don't know how much he has left in the tank) versus the limited, but powerful punching Denis Lebedev. This fight is a lot like the Tarver-Green fight from earlier this year. The much more skilled fighter is on the road, and the question is if that skilled fighter can stop the home fighter. Or will the road fighter get a fair shake? I don't think Toney will get a fair shake and we will have a massive robbery. Lebedev is way too crude and Toney is way too skilled for Lebedev to really do much damage to Toney, I believe. But, I'm going with Lebedev by SD.

Also, on Friday, I think a few hours earlier before the Russian card starts. You might want to wake up and watch Suriyan Sor Rungvisai take on Nobuo Nashiro. Nashiro only has 19 fights under his belt, but he has been in many many wars. From the Alexander Munoz fight, to the two Hugo Fidel Cazares fights, and the Tomas Rojas fight. Even in his last fight against Rey Perez it was quite exciting. Suriyan Sor Rungvasi, meanwhile, is a very talented boxer. His coming out party was his last fight against Tomas Rojas looking quite slick, and quite good. He was always a young, raw, talented fighter, but was just too green and never put it together. Against Rojas he finally did and he looked great. I'm looking for another performance against Nashiro. And I mean c'mon, how can you go against a guy like Suriyan? It's close to the word saiyan. (It's a Dragon Ball Z reference, if your not getting.) :hey :yep

Now, it is Saturday. Which fight do we start off here? There's about 15 fights going on. Let's just take all the fights that have a high probablity of who the winners will be. Chris Arreola is taking on Raphael Butler, and Arreola is still on his tour of getting in shape and trying to get another shot at either Klitschko. Beating fighters like Butler aren't really doing much though. I'd prefer that he takes on Tony Thompson, Eddie Chambers, etc. Either way, Arreola by KO. Guillermo Jones is supposed to be fighting this Saturday. Yeah, I'll believe it when I see it. He's fighting Michael Marrone, for some reason. Marrone has never fought at Cruiserweight, and now he is getting a shot at a world title. Either way, not an exciting fight, and who knows if this will actually happen Jones has only had 2 fights in the past 3 years. And then we got Mariusz Wach and Oliver McCall fighting. Wach is one of the new up an coming Heavyweight prospects. He's got big, and quite crude, and quite powerful. This fight is pretty much Wach's to win, but the intriguing part is whether or not Wach will be able to stop McCall.

I'm glad Showtime is going to show Pier "Apou" Olivier Cote. Cote is quite a prospect. Good boxing skills, and very powerful hands. He has shown one punch knockout power while rising up the ranks. He is making quite a massive leap in competition taking on Jorge Luis Teron. Teron is a real big guy and has good power. Comes forward, a bit crude, but still an opposing fighter because of his size in the 135/140 divisions. I'm hoping to see if Cote gets pushed in this fight, I would definitely like to see if he has the mentally capacity to go 12 rounds against an opposing figure like Teron. This should be a very intriguing fight that might be quite entertaining. Definitely looking forward to this fight, but I think Cote definitely does have the skills and I think he knocks out Teron in this fight and really sends a message as a hot, up and coming prospect.

On the undercard in Mexico, on HBO, another big time prospect is going to be fighting. Peter Quillin an undefeated fighter who continues to work his way up. Quillin has taken on the likes of Antwan Echols, Dionisio Miranda, and just recently this year Dennis Sharpe, Jesse Brinkley, and Jason LeHoullier. Knocking them all out and looking impressive doing it. If he disposes of Craig McEwan, I think he would be ready and Golden Boy Promotions should do their best to get him a shot at a 160 strap. Fighting somebody such as Dmitry Pirog, or a Daniel Geale. No way, they would throw him against somebody like Sergio Martinez, and really nor should they. Either way, he needs to get by Craig McEwan who is a quality opponent, a quality boxer who says he feels disrespected. And I don't blame him, Golden Boy Promotions have pretty much ignored him, and I mean, for most of this write up I'm talking about future fights for Quillin. So, McEwan will definitely have a chip on his shoulder and will give it his best shot, but I think Quillin is too big, too powerful, and too good. I think McEwan's heart gets him past 5 rounds or so, but Quillin eventually stops him.

Now, let's fly over across the pond as the UK has two really good fights as well. One of them is George Groves. The young, undefeated, talented fighter who is coming off a very close, razor thin, majority decision against his rival James DeGale. He is taking on Paul Smith, a very quality, workmen like fighter. He goes in, and tries to make a good fight and really push fighters. Groves will definitely be tested, I believe. Because, let's face it, that DeGale fight could have easily gone the other way, and on my scorecard, it should have. I thought DeGale won, closely, but clearly 116-112. And before that, just a year ago, Kenny Anderson almost knocked him out. To Groves' credit, he survived, showed a big heart, and stopped Kenny Anderson in 6 rounds. I give Paul Smith a great shot at pulling off the upset. I do think Groves wins though by UD, but it a pretty thrilling contest, I believe.

Also, on the card, everyone's favorite Michael Katsidis is back, and back in the UK. It has been 4 fights and a little over a year and a half the last time he was in the UK. The last time he was in the UK, he took on then undefeated Kevin Mitchell. The moment was way too big for Mitchell as 20,000 of his fans showed up in West Ham as saw him getting stopped in 3 rounds. The other time he was in the UK he took on Graham Earl, a fight in which was an absoulte crack er of a fight. Back and forth action, and Katsidis came out on top in a 5th round stoppage. Katsidis is a bit long in the tooth now and has taken massive punishment, he might be close to done now. Ricky Burns is getting Michael Katsidis at the right time. Ricky Burns is a nice, slick, boxer, but he has no power. And he is moving up in weight. I think Katsidis still has enough in the tank for one more big fight and I think he stops Ricky Burns. Who has had a good run, but I think that run comes to an end on Saturday night.

Back over to...let's go to Canada. Remember, the Showtime event? Lucian Bute is the main event taking on the 'Road Warrior' Glen Johnson. People don't like to rate Bute because he hasn't fought anybody, but I disagree on both accounts. One I do rate him, quite highly, and two he has fought quality opponents. He has beaten Andrade twice, Fulgencio Zuniga, Jesse Brinkley, and Brian Magee. All of these fighters might not be the top, elite, fighters of the division, but they are quality. Now he is taking on Glen Johnson, a very tough, durable, quality fighter. Johnson is quite old though. He has looked quite slow at times, and hasn't been able to fight for a whole 3 minutes like he used to be able to do. Johnson, obviously, has no chance of winning a decision in Canada, but to be fair, Bute is the better boxer anyway, and it doesn't really matter where this fight were to take place. Johnson's only shot at winning is by knockout. And Bute has had stamina problems, and punch resistance might be a problem as well. If Johnson can get to Bute just a couple of times he could upset Lucian Bute. It's a big mountain to climb and it is highly unlikely. Johnson has a puncher's chance, but I don't like those odds. I like Bute in this one, and believe it or not, a stoppage is very much possible for Bute. That left hand of his is brutal. Left uppercut to the head and body, over hand left. He has a deadly left hand, and if Johnson is quite predicable coming in, he could get caught with a big left hand and that could end the night. It would be a big accomplishment and it would be a big statement to make. I'm going with Bute winning by wide UD, but a stoppage is the next best thing.

Now, we jump back down to Mexico for the main event, Alfredo Angulo versus James Kirkland. This has all the ingredients to be a war. Earlier this year us boxing fans got a fantastic, short, explosive war in Brandon Rios and Urbano Antillon. Which was about the closest thing to a Hagler-Hearns fight. This fight has the potential to be one of those type fights. Two come forward fighters, big power, and one has been exposed as quite chinny. This just has to be an explosive, short war. Do not get up to get a drink, or use the bathroom, otherwise you may miss big action, or a knockout of the year candidate. James Kirkland was on the road to being back to being the force he was before he was jailed. He had two tuneup fights and was wobbled against Jhon Berrio which was foreshadowing in his next fight against Nobuhiro Ishida. Ishida was an old, quality fighter of the past, coming off a loss. This was supposed to be a nice easy step up fight for Kirkland, and nothing was easy about it. Kirkland came out in his aggressive nature, but was dropped 3 times in about 2 minutes and the fight was over. One of the biggest upsets of the year. He has since won his next two tuneup fights. now, he is jumping deep into the water against Alfredo Angulo. Unfortunately, Angulo's career has slowed down as well, because of legal troubles and he has since been deported to Mexico. This will barely be his 2nd fight this year, which was fairly recently. This will be a great fight for however long it lasts. I've got Angulo winning early in this fight because I believe in his chin, and he seems to be more of an in control aggressive fighter. Kirkland comes out so aggressive that if the fight actually does go into the 3rd and 4th rounds, he may have already blown his load. So, I'm going with Angulo by KO early.

If one wanted to gather the picks made in this league for last week, would one have to comb through the thread from the beginning of the month or is there a particular page/update that one could readily find last week's picks?
