Last week the Pinoys invaded*, now it will be Team Indonesia's turn as they send two emissaries hoping to snatch the zeroes of their favored Siamese opponents, and the vacant WBC Asian Boxing Council titles at stake in both co-main events.

Okay, time for this week's edition of "weird news from around Bangkok".

Some guy was put into a quarantine bubble for some reason, and some army guys stood around somewhere tersely smiling (none wanting to be accountable for hotboxing the room with drunken noodle farts?)

 

Thai & Indonesian anthems.

 

They're not wasting any time, one of the WBC ABC title bouts is about to begin. The only word I made out from the announcer before the anthems started was "Freshmart" but that doesn't exactly narrow it down as both of the local unbeaten Thai fighters have aliases that utilize the "CP Freshmart" sponsor name. (Kittithat Ungsrivongs is Wanchana Menayothin/CP Freshmart, and Tanawat Nakoon is Satanmuanglek CP Freshmart)

 

Feathers up first, I made out the commentators' enunciation of the name Agus Kustiawan, and did a quick Google search and it matches the face.

Round 1

Ungsrivongs is working the body with fast straight burst attacks from range, on script from him so far. Kustiawan is circling away, counterclockwise, head down, luring Ungsrivongs into the ropes and pawing a jab before launching a big overhand ambush right and clapping it against Ungsrivongs' shoulder. Excellent body combos by Ungsrivongs spiraling in close on Kustiawan, mixing in some hooks and croquet-sticks on the upper hips.

Round 2

Ungsrivongs is working combinations downstairs, occasionally lunging in with them and diving after Kustiawan to cut off his escape route. A few blows stray a bit south of the border in consequence, juddering off Kustiawan's thighs and outer groin area. The ref is quick to warn Ungsrivongs to keep them up. He soon thereafter shows even-handedness in also warning Kustiawan not to push down on Ungsrivongs' head in a brief Muay Thai style clinch. Ungsrivongs leaps backward to dodge an odd jumping-in-place left hook from Kustiawan, who thinks better of taking lead offensively and retreats. Ungsrivongs keeps chipping away on the body with left hooks. Kustiawan charges in, holds and hits with his free arm.

Agus is losing but not here to lie down complacently.

 

Round 3

The ref warns both about something, unclear. Action hasn't really even resumed yet since the bell. Maybe a preemptive warning about hitting on the break, which both then proceed to do a couple of times, eliciting further cautions. Ungsrivongs drills Kustiawan about the waist, herding him into a corner, going to work, unloading even faster straight volleys on the gut. Kustiawan goes down from accumulation. He's cuffed on the way down and complains to the ref about a rabbit punch but the ref waves off the concern, as though saying "yeah, a grazing one, as you were falling - but that isn't why you got knocked down, and it wasn't a severe or flagrant foul, so shush." More nice work downstairs by Ungsrivongs, jabbing and hooking off the jab. Kustiawan has had the fight beaten out of him and is resorting to holding now until forced to relinquish, pattern repeating until the bell.

Still ¾ of the bout to go, no way it lasts the distance IMO.

 

Round 4

Kustiawan comes out windmilling wildly!! Just slapping the right hand down heavily from a half a food overhead. Ungsrivongs covers up and waits for him to finish as Kustiawan throws clattering ungainly full-power hooking combos up and down his sides, mostly hitting the backs of his arms. Ungsrivongs now goes to work, jabs to chest and face, big hooks under the elbows. Kustiawan is flailing with the right and going for broke. They exchange jabs, Kustiawan stepping in and throwing his forcefully hoping to take command of the center of the ring - but Ungsrivongs lands his, very stiff, across the nose and side of the jaw, and Kustiawan is sat down! That jab scrambled his circuits, he looks disoriented! The ref waves it off and calls the physician over to administer to Kustiawan.

KO4!!

 

Cue the glass chin jokes but I honestly don't think Kustiawan has one. Jab kayos (on non-glass) are rare, but they can happen, they just require absolute precision and perfect technique, and Ungsrivongs seemed to have that, even though I've barely ever seen him throw a head punch before.
