Probably a fair call Riser. It appeared pretty obvious that Briggs had no pop whatsoever left for at least the last few rounds. He suddenly found some energy and looked switched-on again briefly at the start of the final round, but hey...
I disagree, i would have them both probably in the lower 15-20 range of the top 20 Heavyweights of all time. Im very against a Super Heavyweight division also.
Briggs went for a ct scan fearing a brain bleed. All clear there but he suffered: Broken left orbital socket, fractured right eye bone, broken nose, torn bicep (painful) was disoriented and sleepy after the fight. On top of that, he apparently got the crap kicked out of him for 12 rds straight, i didnt watch it...just what im reading. And no one stopped the fight. Unbelievable.
Here's the thing though. Most boxing fans tend to combine their records because they won't fight each other. I don't think they should fight each other, I'm just pointing out that if you go through their individual records, it's not that flash...
For both guys the WBO title is irrelevant. Neither was considered the man of the division while holding that strap. Vitali Klitschko: Beat Corrie Sanders for the title and defended it against Danny Williams before retiring. Came back and has beaten Sam Peter, Juan Carlos Gomez, Arreola, Kevin Johnson, Albert ****ing Sosnowski and Shannon Briggs. Wladimir: Beat Chris Byrd and has defended against: Calvin Brock, Ray Austin, Lamon Brewster, Sultan Ibragimov, Tony Thompson, Hasim Rahman, Ruslan Chagaev, Eddie Chambers and Sam Peter. You might as well throw Dereck Chisora in there as well. I feel sick after typing out that horrible group of names. Wladimir has the better resume, but I would consider Vitali the better fighter. Both guys need a marquee victory over the likes of David Haye or Povetkin. Odlanier Solis is about to fight a WBC eliminator as well. At least when Tyson, Holmes or Ali fought a long list of undeserving challegers they got them out of there in an interesting fashion.
i dont know why all the hate for klitschko's, its not there fault they are so good compared to the rest of the competition, i like watching them fight, they are different stylewise but they are so dominant, and have no doubt they would be right up there fighting guys in any era.. i think Vitali is a top 10 heavyweight of all time, with wlad a little lower on the cusp of 15-20... i know its all personal opinion so everyone is bound to have different thoughts..
Well come on genius, get out there and show us all how good you are and start him on the road to that $30 million a year. Just keep your head down so you can avoid those pretend death threats. You figured out yet who enjoyed your absence the most from the gym? Keep turning up champ, I'm sure everyone there loves your presence.
Yeah fair enough...i probably would have Vitali near the 15 mark & Wlad closer to 20. Unfortuntely them bring in a terrible era has done them no favours. I agree tho should they both beat some of Haye, Povetkin, Solis etc. would add some depth to their records.
Their natural advantages in height, reach and strength have enabled them to fight in a very one dimensional manner and still absolutely dominate. I don't dislike them, just find their fights boring and as predictable as a low budget mini-series. Brewster proved against Wlad that if you can make him work, and at the same time you can survive, not easy to do mind you, he'll gas. Brewster charged Wlad at the opening bell and forced him to continually jab at a rate about 3 times more often than he normally prefers - in the first round alone Wlad thew something like 60 jabs. I think if Briggs had have taken the same approach against Vitali he may have been able to exploit him in a similar manner, or at least given himself the best possible chance he had of winning - even if it was only a small one. It certainly looked like Briggs' plan was to wear down Vitali, but he couldn't, or at least didn't, make him work early enough or continuously enough.
Wins against those guys would help them considerably. Here's the thing. Does Vitali beating Corrie Sanders, Danny Williams, Sam Peter, Juan Carlos Gomez, Arreola, Kevin Johnson, Albert ****ing Sosnowski and Shannon Briggs place him above Riddick Bowe? Riddick's title reign was brief, but he won the title and lost it to an all time great in two sensational fights. He also won the rubber match that the world viewed as being between the world's two best Heavyweights at the time. Food for thought mate. Vitali and Wladimir have quantity, but the quality is as low as it gets. What rates higher?
Another thing that dilutes their 'greatness' is the fact that the two best heavyweights of their time (themselves) have never, and will never, meet.
Absolutely. Bowe fought and beat Holyfield 2 out of 3 times and each time it was a great fight and the world's number 1 v the number 2. I don't really expect the Klits to fight each other, but it does hurt their overall ranking that they never beat the highest available opposition.
