Yeah, I don't want to be a miserable bugger but there's a lot of short-term thinking on this fight, bordering on denial. Nothing against Vitali, who I'm backing to win, but I truly believe a Peter win would be the best thing for the division.

Fandom aside, there is so much more Peter can do as WBC champ with a win over Vitali than vice versa. If I said that on General I'd expect to get multiple-flamed in minutes by those wanting their favourite Vitali to win above and beyond anything but statistics and bragging rights, but logically I think that's undeniable.

Wlad-Peter II for three belts would be big big big. Even if Wlad left hooks him into Bolivia within a round, it would still be a big event in the HW division.

Yes, it's about time we had a unified champ again. Of course there's no certainty it would ever happen if Peter would win, but there's obviously more chance of unification fights than if Vitali wins.

I'm quite neutral so far, and I don't mind who wins. That may change come the night of the fight though.

Peter is not a guaranteed to be a good WBC champion. This is a complete unknown. Peter might settle for fighting mandatories, and not seeking out other champions for title unification matches. Title unification matches are very hard to make. Sometimes managers don’t want them because they fear losing, or would rather right Tony Thompson and make 10+ million. Another issue is scheduling between mandatories for both fighters. Another issue on Peter is will he stay in shape?

While I understand Peter is young, boxing these days tends to rely more on older names. Clazaghe, De La Hoya, Jones, etc…

Vital more risks on the way up, and as champion. If Vitlai wins, I think the general media that ignores boxing will pause and mention the accomplishment and the historical significance of two brothers being world champions at the same time. Boxing could use that type of news.

I prefer Vitli as a man and a fighter. But it is blatantly obvious that a Peter win is the best thing for boxing.

It sets up a massive rematch with Wlad, with an angle for the hype job to take it overground. The Nigerian Nightmare destroys Wlad's brother, whom Peter decked 3 times in the first fight. It would be a huge fight and would crown a definitive champ, Chagaev frozen out unless he wants to take on the winner.

    It's obvious.

    But that's exactly it.

They'll pause. And mention it. And then move on.

A Wlad-Peter II bout, for all the reasons McGrain points out above and more, gets build-up and interest over a period of months. Leading to the climax of an actual fight where three belts are unified.

That would be bigger than the Klitschko Dream, even in Europe.

why are people making such a big deal out of these two? ruslan chagaev and nicolay valuev are clearly the 2nd and 3rd best heavyweights in the world.

I´d love too but I´m still a student and while I spent more time at work than at university I still don´t earn enough to afford the prices for that fight. 100 Euro is a lot of money to me. I will have some people around my place to watch the fight, before that we will watch the WM qualification match Germany-Russia on TV and before that attend at 2 amateur futbol games. Great timing this evening.

Nikolay Valuev is not much of an attraction. Watching him fight, is like watching the grass grow. Ruslan Chagaev seems to be temporarily removed from the heavyweight picture.

Chagaev seems the kind of fighter that could be capable of making people sit up and take notice, but he's just injured so damn much. It's really wrecked his momentum, and (even though I like the guy) Matt Skelton is not the kind of person to pick to look good against when you finally do get back in the ring.

    Not so sure actualy.

His title fights get more coverage in the British press than those of Either Klitschko brother, Chagev or Peter.

I think it is a win win fight for the fans to be honest.

Whoever wins it will bring a boost to the division directly or indirectly.

The only way we loose is if it is a draw.

Sounds like a great night. :good

I can watch RTL and Das Erste here, so i'll at least see it live as well. Even if one of them is fat and the other old, i'm very much looking forward to this fight finally happening! :happy

Sure, in the short term that's right...my argument is that in the long term, a Peter victory could be bigger.

If Vitali was willing to fight Wlad, really came out and said he'd do it for the sake of the unification and the division, I'd completely change my tune. That would be the biggest HW fight around, no doubt at all.

But if he doesn't want to, as he's always said and fair play to his reasons for doing so...then the next biggest is Wlad-Peter II.
