How exactly does the purse bid work anyway? Are you only allowed the one bid, so basically you can't continually counter offers like an auction? Seems a bit daft if so.

Basically you submit your one bid in a closed envelope so no one else knows what it is.

Then you find out a Russian Gangster has trebled your bid.

    Thanks for sharing.

This is a tidy sum. The matter of concern though is Hrunov's mention of Putin.

This fight becomes more than a sporting event. It is better that politicians stay away from this stuff. In some places politicians just have too much power.

"Putin wants this fight" Sounds a bit like Mugabe wanting Ali - Foreman in Zaire.

As I said, Russia is a HUGE market.

These guys can exploit that in a way K2 Promotions can only dream of!

For Mobutu it was a publicity stunt. It is not like the result really mattered.

    ...............

Ryabinsky is in the public eye, VP of the RPBF, he's elated and talking about it on twitter. Hardly some gangster lurking in the shadows.

"We all were totally surprised," Klitschko manager Bernd Boente told ESPN.com. "We only have to make sure that the money goes into escrow and that it's real. We are definitely willing to go through with it, but we have to make sure this is not one of those fake Don King purse bids [where he has defaulted multiple times after high bids]."
