This way and still be great? What I mean, is it possible for a great fighter to be stopped with one punch and still be great, or does it show a lack of heart, durability, and so on? Not being stopped with a volley of punches, but being out cold from a single one. A one punch knockout. How many truly great fighters have been knocked out clean with a single punch? Mike Tyson for example has always taken ungodly beatings, same thing with Louis vs. Schmeling I...
..........Too many variables come into play to give any definitive answer. Who's delivering the punch to score the KO? At what point in the career are we talking about? And sometimes, you just get caught. Having your lights put out has nothing to do with heart. Terry Norris got starched badly by a shot fom Jackson, for example. He went on to big things. Though he did get up from the first knockdown, it was essentially one left hook that ended Ruben Olivares' night against Arguello.
Norris has been faulted for having a very weak chin, though. Which ties into what I'm asking. The Arguello/Ruben fight was a very late stoppage, where Norris was stopped in two by Jackson. McClellan basically traded with Jackson, in comparison.
..........Hmmmm. I'm afraid I don't follow what you're talking about. I mean, both examples I gave were fighters regarded as great that were both stopped by single punches.....
Roberto duran is indisputably an all time great, yet got stopped with one shot. Ditto lennox lewis twice. The context is important, duran was 19 pounds over his lightweight reign, past his prime and facing arguably the best 154 one shot puncher in history. Lewis was out of shape and lazy v rahman 1 and was reckless v mcall 1,yet he beat both inside easily in rematches. Jones was starched twice by one punch, yet was still a great fighter, norris was a fine fighter yet also was demolished a few times. Finally, emile griffith and kalamby were both demolished in one round, yet outside of these fights were shown to be durable and very good to great fighters. EDIT/ Tommy hearns got sparked by hagler and barkley yet was without doubt an all time great, both defeats also came above his best weight and he gave both opponent hell before the stoppages.
Yes JT,he had taken some solid stick before, but i still feel this fight was a one punch stoppage,i think that final punch would have stopped duran at any time, even the first. ( Not to mention most of the best lt heavies and all the middles around.)
No, I don't see how suffering some specific type of knockout can immediately disqualify you from any given position in history. Jim Corbett, Jack Johnson, Ezzard Charles, Jersey Joe Walcott, Lennox Lewis- all of these guys lost one-punch knockouts in world title fights. If you get hit with one shot just right, particularly if your chin isn't among the very strongest (which isn't a prerequisite for being a great fighter), you can be knocked out. It's just a fact of life.
didnt ezzard get absolutly flatlined by jersey joe? left uppercut span his head around 180 degrees yet i s ee very few poeple saying he had a weak chin or that jersey jope was a super puncher
All boxers are human. They can all be knocked out. Nobody is invulnerable. Hell, even Ali was thisclose to getting KO'd by one punch against Henry Cooper. Not trashing him or saying he didn't have a great chin. Just saying that the right punch can be landed against any fighter. That's part of why I find boxing exciting. Anything can happen.
hear hear:happy i would also like to add that even the most powederpuff of fighters can knock somone out it's just finding a way to knokc out your opponant. look at manny augustus he was not a powerpuncher maybe a left hook to the body was the closest thign to a money punch. but hwne he timed and caught floyd with a right hand floyd was generally shook and bleeding.
Donald Curry wsa ko,d by a single shot [ left hook] i still think he,s one of the best welterweights off all time though....
