After the Ellis-Patterson controversy in the WBA title fight in Stockholm in Sept. 68, Floyd took two years off and resurfaced in his final comeback in Sept. 70 against blown up Lt. Heavy Charlie 'Devil' Green. Floyd was obviously rusty and started slow. Green (that *****) butted him in the 4th, opening a gash over Floyd's eye and tried to rub against it in later rounds to make it worse with Clancy in Green's corner, I'll never forgive Gil for allowing him to do that. Back to thread. Finally in the final round Patterson nailed the little ***** with a left hook to the rib cage that had Green down, glassy eye'ed not nowing where he was. He was Gone! 8-9-10! You're out you low life cheating punk. That was always sweet for me to see except that head butt cost Floyd an even greater effort against Ali in his swan song in Sept. 72. I honestly don't think Ali could have taken Floyd out that night, not a win but a more defining effort in his last fight.

 

Good posting! I watched that bout also and didn't think Patterson would ever get going. It seemed the announcer said it wasn't a bad gash but I wasn't aware of how Green was trying to rub it open. I wonder if the cut Ali put on him was from the scar tissue, it well could be. I had Patterson up at the stoppage, he was looking really good too, what a shame.

 

I thought they might throw in Frazier's body punch ko over Quarry in their second go. Jerry just couldn't get his stomach tightened up by that time.

 

Think Gerry Cooney took out a few guys with body shots. Ron Lyle I believe was one of them.

very true, I saw Cooney live take out Ed Gregg? and Ron Lyle with brutal left hooks to the body, there body's just went limp. Cooney had one of the best left hooks to the body I have ever seen, his mentality, confidence could have been stronger and if only he had a right hand. I also dont think the wacko twins moved him right for his boxing future ( a fight against the durable Tex Cobb may have been a good night and a chance to go past 8 rounds) but the Wacko twins moved him to a big money fight so I dont wanna be a Monday morning quarterback. Still if I could make the perfect heavyweight Cooney left hook to the body I would take over Frazier's and that's saying a lot. Most good trainers and good fighters with wisdom knew enough to stay clear of Cooneys hook and that was the blueprint to beat him. (Holmes did it well)

I left out Dempsey and he had the original " hands of stone" he carried a lot of density and punched to the heart, chest, stomach and arms, Marciano liked the shoulders, and arms and body but is known for the head KO's of Layne,Walcott and Charles but there was also a lot of body shots leading up to the head KO's

 

I was wrong about Gregg that was mostly head shots and the fight was in CA, it was a felt Forum fight in NY may have been Rodrick Mason but it was one left hook. I was also at the Lyle fight and went to Gerry dressing room before the fight to wish him luck
