Seriously, it's not surprising that boxing isn't as big in Australia as it once was. With myself I had no friends that were into boxing while most of them were into rugby league, cricket, soccer etc... When it comes down to spending your youth in a gym for a shot of glory at the Olympics (which gets a few hours of T.V coverage every four years) or playing rugby league (or other sports) that all your mates play and is on the TV non stop, then the choice is easy, especially with the stupid laws in NSW that state youngsters can't fight until they are 14 years old!!!

What chance does that give us?

That said my kids love the sport and even have their favourite fighters. My eldest son (almost 11yrs) is tall and lightly framed but lacks a little mongrel and I'm not one to push so time will tell. My daughter (8yrs) is a power punching slugger who enjoys belting up the older boys in the street. She can fire up like the wife but unfortunately (or maybe not) girls can't fight in NSW so we'd have to travel to the ACT. Realistically I doubt that we'd want her to go in that direction.

The youngest one (6yrs) he is a real piece of work. Many a time I've had to refuse sparring with him because I don't enjoy going to bed with headaches after he has landed a few heavy shots. He played his first year of rugby league last season and was a standout in every aspect and as stupid as it sounds I found it hard to keep a lid on my enthusiasm. Even though he is young it's easy to see that he is an athelete, not surprising considering the bloodlines :nut

No really, the wife was a champion athelete in sprinting and high jump. She also trained at Bankstown PCYC under Bernie McMahon but found it tough because of the laws restricting her. I found it tougher because I was the only one she could spar with and I never dared hit her back :twisted:

The relatives back in the day fought when Australia was among the greatest boxing nations. Lets hope guys like Katsidis, Darchinyan, Kickett and Choc can get it back to where it should be and then the youngsters will have some new heros to follow.

I've been hearing that quite a bit lately. I'm starting to think that it wasn't her that was fortunate that night we met.

We met at a pub on a Sunday night. I like Sunday nights out, it's not busy, but not quiet, and it's a more friendly environment too because the place is filled with back packers and travellers who generally don't want to cause trouble.

I didn't think at the time that we'd hook up in a relationship, just though it'd be a one nighter, but it turned out differently.

She used to be a pro volleyball player back in Japan but she gave it away because it was too stressful. Their coach used to full on slap them when they'd **** up, and apparently her parents (all players parents, ect) were ok with it.
I'm not talking about a Nathan Brown slap either, sometimes they caused her to bleed from the mouth. I find it a bit sad that it was the cause of her giving up a game she loved, and was very good at. But thats the way it apparently is in Japan.
