NOTE: I'm in no way trying to gloat about how hard I can hit. I just want to know where I stand

I just started seriously boxing 3 weeks ago. I'm 5'11 1/2 and I weigh around 231 lbs and 210-217 lean. I had a question about my punching power. When I was hitting the heavybag I work on the heaviest bag in the place which weighs over 200 lbs and when I hit the bag it moves like crazy and it swings all over the place. And I remember hearing the head coach said to someone else that the bag was equal to a 300 lb man-something (I couldn't fully makeout what he was saying cuss I was training). Then another time when I was hitting a bag made for uppercuts and I hit it with a right uppercut and made the entire bag shake and fly a little into the air. And a different trainer I worked with about a year ago said I had heavy hands. Now sometimes I feel like I don't hit hard when I'm working the mitts with my trainer because he doesn't really say anything about how hard I hit, but when I get to the heavy bags I can move them like no one else in the gym.

Why do you think this is? And with the numbers I gave, how hard would you say I could hit?

I just started to seriously train. So I haven't been able to spar yet. I was just wondering if there is a way to know from the way I hit the bag.

the bag aint supposed to shake all over the place and go swinging wildly, ur supposed to have it undercontrol, pick a few combos move and hit again not chasing around the room. go down the circus and punch one of those boxing machines is the usual method.
    and hows it going murder69

any bag will move like crazy when you push it, not punch it.

so, work on your punching technic and your mitt work will be better, and bags will stay still when you punch them.

You're a big guy so you probably are heavyhanded. Thing is so are the guys you fight. So being heavyhanded says nothing about your relative power. You'll find out once you start sparring. If you're accidentally hurting guys your size or larger, you hit hard.

You won't know right away either, because you won't be landing properly timed shots. Once you have some experience, you'll start to land punches just right and the effects will be there if you're a natural puncher.

Hint: If your mitt holders comment on your power being good for your size, that's an indication. Anybody can whack away at the heavybag because it doesn't require range or timing, but mitts help you concentrate your power on a specific target.

    AKA: Push-punching not snapping.
Try to get a bit further away and retract your hand just as fast as you strike the bag. That just helps to get the concept down.
