Definitely not forgotten by me, as a teenage boxing fan it was a good time in this fans life, so I can still remember clearly where I was, who with etc to see him beat Coetzee, A short period as champ, a fragmented life after he lost the title and a sad final demise. But hey no one can remove his name from the annals of boxing history, as a former WBA heavyweight champion of the world.
I met John some years after his retirement. He was helping out with a local club at an amateur show, working the corner and whatnot. He was as nice as he could be, happily signed autographs for kids who realized the former heavyweight champ was in the house and seemed very much happy and in his element.
He always struck me as a good guy way back then when he was a contender and then won the belt. Boxings golden era
