Life sucks. I set a record by flattening an alltime great. And one year later
from my greatest triumph, I was dead. Who was I ?

GREATA, Al Bummy Davis it is... On Feb 18,1944 my dad and I watched our neghberhood ko artist Al Bummy Davis, an 8-1 underdog flatten the
vaunted Bob Montgomery in 1.03 seconds of the 1st round with a tremendous left hook to the jaw. Set a record for the quickest knockout by a main eventer.Bummy a real tough hombre, had one punch, the best left hook since old Charlie White of Chicago...We went crazy that night. Two weeks later I saw Bummy hit the GREAT Beau Jack with that left hook ,but not on the sweet spot. Beau Jack wobbled, survived and gave Davis a one sided thrashing in 10 rds...But poor Davis, the next year was killed by 4 holdup men in a bar he just sold. With 3 bullets in him he still dropped the 3 men, but a fourth bullet in the neck proved fatal..He died a hero. Just a month before I saw him and his wife leaving a small restaurant I was in...:good

Yes, Bummy was reviled after he kod a shot Tony Canzoneri in 1939 at MSG for Canzy's only knockout loss in 175 fights.Tony never fought again...Tony Canzoneri was beloved as a fighter..Bummy Davis was considered a street fighter ala Rocky Graziano.. But Al Davis died a hero...b.b.

Wait,,,,,,,,,, the New York fans couldn't wait for Fritzie Zivic to get a hold of
    Al 'Bummy' Davis
And when he did,,,,,,,,he tore him up,,,,,,payback for hurting Tony.

Visavis , Zivic/Davis, boys will be boys... Bummy was only testing Zivic's foul protector! Meant no harm !

Bummy Davis was secretly told to join the service, which he did, but after a brief tour , Bummy was discharged. But for his gesture of joining the service,
he got back his license to box in Ny. Without a warmup bout he faced the
prime Al Davis and was stopped in ten rds, 1941...Greb, Fritzie Zivic, Lew Jenkins, and Bummy Davis, along with Rocky Graziano were kindred souls...
They would clean out a bar, methinks...
